Did you see the Best Picture screw up last night on the Oscars?

I am baffled that Beatty did not see that was not the right envelope when he clearly saw Emma Stones name at the top of the card. That should have been a dead giveaway especially for someone in the biz for as long as he has. All involved though handled it well.

I haven’t seen it yet, but I read that he did realize it and showed it to Faye Dunaway who saw the movie name under Emma Stones name so she read that.
Again, I didn’t see it yet, though I have it taped. For anyone that did see it, does that look like what happened?
It doesn’t fill me with good feelings towards PriceWaterhouse…
@jca. That doesn’t really confirm to me that he was confused. He does show it to Faye, but neither seems confused.
I could care less. #notnewsworthy
I love the movies and have seen most of them so I do enjoy watching the Oscars unlike some here. I went to bed after “LaLa Land” was announced as best picture – not happy with that choice but not surprised. I was quite amazed to discover the mistake this morning. An unfortunate occurrence but I’m delighted that “Moonlight” which I thought was the best movie, got the award.
@chyna He did say in a clip that he was confused and that’s why he showed it to her. Weird happening!
I thought it was quite a good Oscar night over all and was pretty content with the awards and speeches.
No. I have never voluntarily watched an awards show and probably never will. Every time I see someone talking about it, all I can think is a newspaper headline saying: “Whole world shocked as extremely complicated stage show experiences minor glitch. Social media heads promise round the clock coverage until next time Kim Kardashian tweets.”
No, I rarely watch award shows unless forced to by friends and family.
However, I did see Negan toast a doctor.
It could have been a time shift. Or maybe the hosts need glasses. There could be a psychological reason for it.
Let’s talk about the Superbowl some more, instead. Wasn’t that an awesome comeback and a great finish?
Wow! Since it was all over the news, I heard about it. The link from @jca was handy.
At least they corrected it as soon as possible. The whole episode reminded me of Steve Harvey.
@LuckyGuy That’s the second reference I’ve hear to Steve Harvey. What did he do?
He announced the wrong winner of the Miss Universe contest a couple of years ago. Here is article.
Was so funny, Warren looked liked he’d pissed in his pants coz he couldn’t find his dick.
I feel bad for him. Instead of immediately reading off the card, he kind of stared at it awkwardly and then had Faye read it. I think he knew something was wrong
The hosts could be lacking in literacy.
@Sunshinegirl11 I think Warren knew something was amiss…just watch him look and look again at the card and I think he was wanting to get Fayes opinion on the matter and she blurted out the winner not noticing Emma’s name was on top. Then Warren has this ooops we just screwed up big time look.
That’s what happened. What a nightmare for Beatty. Like he didn’t already look like a dottering old unsteady fuck.
I was following Canada’s national women’s curling championship so only caught this by way of twitter… everyone going what wait what wait what what.
Learning about the double set of envelopes sort of helps it makes sense. Someone’s going to be in doodoo for not switching to the correct envelope.
I heard about it on the radio this morning. How on earth was the wrong envelope put into Warren Beatty’s hands? That said it should have been apparent that a card reading ‘Emma Stone, La La Land’ was an actress award and not for best picture. It’s just another example of the old saying if something can go wrong it will go wrong.
The guy that yanked the envelope out of Warren Beatty’s hand had to have given Warren a heck of a paper cut.
Rumor is that they were given the wrong envelope.
There are two envelopes for each award. One is held on each side of the stage.
It seems that both of Emma Stone’s envelopes went out – once for her award from one side of the stage and then for the Best Picture from the other side of the stage. The person on the second side didn’t switch out their Best Actress Envelope for the Best Picture envelope.
I keep hearing that @BellaB but have never heard the reason that there are two. Do you know the reason?
Apparently they don’t know in advance which side the presenters will be coming out from so they have a full set of envelopes on each side. It seems that the protocol is that there is an envelope opener and an award announcer – the envelope comes from the side of the envelope opener. It makes some sense – so you don’t have people crossing behind the presenters to give the envelope to the envelope opener.
I have a friend of mine who was there and he said that it was “pande-fucking-monium”. The Moonlight people were 4 or 5 rows in front of him.
