Do you ever have to wait a while, after you've eaten, to feel full?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47069points) March 2nd, 2017

I was awfully hungry about an hour and a half ago so I ate a small bowl of imitation crab meat, which I dipped in butter, then made a cheese pizza out of half an English muffin, tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. I know that’s enough to fill me up, but I’m still hungry! But I don’t feel like eating. I know from experience I’ll feel full in a while, or at least I won’t be hungry any more.
Why does that happen sometimes?

I don’t. I should. You gonna eat that?

I already ate it!

I find that after 20 mins of eating something I will feel less hungry or totally satiated. Almost why I hate to go to a restaurant that by the time the entre arrives I am not hungry from already eating the soup and salad. Doggie bag.

I know. I berate myself for buying appetizers! I mean, that’s all I need. Just can’t resist those fried mushrooms, though. Doggie bag for the actual meal.

I’ve heard that it takes about 20 minutes to feel full.

My guess is that the chemicals created by digestion, have to reach a certain level before they affect the related abdominal neuroreceptors

I’m the opposite. I have a “displacement theory”. In the middle of eating I always have to poop. And after that I am just done with food and get a doggie bag.

I shared this theory with my old manager at work and he had the same issue. This was when I worked at the movie theater and we had that glass box with microphones that we would sell tickets from. The microphones just went into a empty parking lot so we spent around 8 hours one morning making a rap about needing to shit in the middle of a meal. During the day shift on a Monday there would be about 20 customers.

If I eat ‘till I feel full I have F*cked up and eaten way too much. I need to stop before I feel full.

kritiper's avatar

@rojo I do that, too.

Yes. It seems that it takes a while for the brain to catch up and signal that I don’t need to eat any more.

Yes, I am a total foodie and can easily overeat, especially certain things like my delicious spaghetti sauce. I can easily eat two heaping servings in 20 minutes with salad and garlic bread too. haha
When I pay attention I can feel satiated with less but, well…here’s a good bit to describe my eating enthusiasm. Yep, the meal is not over just because I am full. It really is a wonder I don’t weigh 300 lbs. lol

I hate that feeling too @rojo. I almost never do it. By “full” I meant you finally feel like you’ve eaten and aren’t hungry any more.
