Do you think Danny Masterson is guilty of sexually assaulting fellow Scientologists?

Asked by NerdyKeith (5489points) March 3rd, 2017

Some of you might remember him as Steven from That 70s Show. Well he’s a Scientologist (I didn’t even realise he was a Scientologist).

Not only that, but he’s being accused of sexually assaulting and raping fellow Scientologists. Apparently the Church of Scientology have been attempting to cover this up. Do you think he is innocent or guilty of the crime?

A cover up is almost always admission there was a crime or serious misdeed that occurred that would bring sever embarrassment to an organization

“Three women have come forward and disclosed that they were sexually assaulted by Masterson during the early 2000s”

Why are they talking about it now? Why not reporting him then?

I immediately suspect all these “oh yeah he raped me ten years ago” cases. Not saying he’s innocent, but I firmly believe it’s some publicity stunt rather than seeking justice.
Also, that article does not mention any statements by Scientology church.

@Sneki95 With all due respect, we do not know the level of blackmailing or manipulation done to these women. Let us not ignore that the church of scientology are notorious for committing blackmail. They are very good at extracting information of their members and using it against them.

As a matter of firm principle I never – ever – consider a person to be “guilty” of a charged crime unless I’m on the jury hearing the evidence, or a jury that I believe to be as fair and impartial as we’re likely to see has done that and produced a guilty verdict.

There may be probable cause to bring him to trial, but I’m not going to jump on anyone’s bandwagon to convict without hearing the evidence – and that includes the case for the defense, too.

“Innocent until proven guilty” is not just a handy saying; it’s a way of life.

There is no way of knowing whether he is guilty or not. We don’t have access to the evidence being presented.

However, there are many reasons why a person might not report a sexual assault. We only have to look at the recent criminal cases involving historic rape/sexual assault involving a number of famous people to know people can feel intimidated about reporting such activity. There is also evidence of women being disbelieved by authorities in those cases. With this situation involving the Church of Scientology, that would only compound the potential for intimidation of the victims. If he is a high profile church member, they wouldn’t want this story out there.

There are many, many reasons why a person wouldn’t report sexual assault. We aren’t that far removed from shaming the women for any sexual assault.

@cwotus said it well.

Here’s the confusing part. No matter what Masterson’s innocence or guilt is, the fact that Scientology is involved makes me very very uneasy.

They have a decades long history of intimidation, use of force, lying in court, and so on. So my inclination, without knowing all the facts, is that the Church of Scientology is almost assuredly in the wrong.

His mustache in the picture sourced clearly indicates that he is guilty. If you take away the beard,it’s your standard rape-stache…

I think that fucking Kelso is setting poor Steve and the rest of us up for a major BURN!

I must assume, as any good and proper American should, that the man is innocent until proven guilty.
