It is not so correlated as to say;“if you have diabetes you will be likely to get Alzheimers” or even, “you got Alzheimers because you had diabetes”.

Over the thousands of cases of each disease each year, if there were a highly correlated relationship, there would be a lot more attention being paid to it.

This is the trouble with tabloids picking up small research papers: the sample size was so small (30 cases) as to be statistically meaningless.

Insulin resistance may be one of many factors. But way too early to say, “diabetes causes Alzheimers.”

In the medical literature there is a definite link between diabetes and dementia, that is not in question. As @zenvelo points out, it’s just a link, not an established cause or effect.

On the next point: why don’t people know about this connection? I think it’s simply that if you make the lifestyle changes necessary to reduce your risk of dementia, then you are following the same steps to help reduce your risk of other problems associated with diabetes. Also, dementia isn’t a problem now for the diabetic where as having a hypo or losing a foot to diabetic foot ulcers are much more immediate concerns.

Correlation =/= causation.

For whatever reason, reported diet links to disease have not been very reliable. We were told to avoid coffee and alcohol and now we are told they are okay and maybe beneficial in moderation. Let’s see what they say about the diabetes/dementia connection next year.

When I had my open heart surgery, they put me on a diabetic diet for a week, justifying it by saying with low blood sugar, I would heal faster.
Sure as shit, during that week my chest healed quickly, and my psoriasis on my elbows disappeared! Back on a realistic menu, my psoriasis returned.
So, if diabetes plays havok with your healing, it makes sense that it effects the brain.
