Are there any matriarchal religions?

Asked by Brian1946 (32538points) March 10th, 2017

It’s my understanding that the Abrahamic ones are patriarchal, and I’d like to know if there are any matriarchal religions.

There are a number of them both ancient and modern. They focus on/worship The Goddess.

Shaktism/Shaktidharma, Basaque Paganism, the beliefs of Minos, Wicca, and the Goddess Movement, all have a fundamental female Godhead.

Drow elves, from Forgotten Realms novels , are matriarchal religions.

The patriarchal religions tend to be the ones that are monotheistic, or that emphasize the male patriarch (generally variations of the Sun god) over the others. Non-patriarchal religions tend to have a pantheon with several female and male deities, rather than a supreme or solitary matriarch goddess. There are many many goddesses.

I believe Judaism was matriarchal at one time. Wicca is the first to come to mind.
