Trivial Pursuit time (which means you can't Google: How many horses have won the American Triple Crown?
Before last night (when I Googled) I would have only been able to name 3 off the top of my head. There are more than that.
Bonus points if you can name them.

I think just two:
Seabiscuit&manowar?
Guessing seven (just a guess, I really don’t know). I think there was a decades-long stretch with none.
I can name one for sure, maybe two.
I want to hear more answers before naming any horses.
Surely we’re safe with Man-O-War, though!
Secretariat and Affirmed, both in the last fifty years. I will guess ten over the years.
We watched Secretariat again last night, which is what prompted this question. Amazing horse, amazing story, amazing woman. All the shit she had to go through because she stepped out of her socially assigned role of wife and mother, and dared to blaze right into the men’s world.
Doh! Secretariat not seabiscuit.
Four, I think. I remember there were three for the longest time, and one recently got it.
Yeah. It surprised me when I learned, just last night, that we had a winner in 2015, American Pharoah. Why didn’t I hear about it? Lord, Secretarial was ALL OVER when he won in 73. Guess we’re just too distracted to hear about that stuff any more.
The real question is: how many have been turned into burgers?
The answer is 12(United_States.) I was guessing 3, for sure: Man-O-War, Citation and Secretariat. Usually it’s some decades inbetween wins, but we had 3 in the 70’s alone! Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977), Affirmed (1978.) I don’t remember the last two because ♪ “Then I got high, then I got high, then I got high.” ♫
Too bad Seabiscuit couldn’t run. He could have won, but he was the wrong age or something. War Admiral, his arch enemy won in 1937 and Seabiscuit soundly beat him a year later: ”…two hundred yards from the wire, Seabiscuit pulled away again and continued to extend his lead over the closing stretch, finally winning by four lengths despite War Admiral’s running his best time for the distance.”
Google “Ruffian.” Never won but an amazing story.
Thanks for reminding me @jca…I really want to see it!
Man-O-War isn’t on the list, his son War Admiral is there.
Seabiscuit (also not a triple Crown Winner) was Man-O-War’s grandson.
Seabiscuit vs War Admiral was one of the greatest races ever
The two I remembered were American Pharaoh and Secretariat. I should have known Whirlaway. I had a horserace board game as a kid and Whirlaway was my favorite.
Ruffian’s death was so sad! She was such a fan favorite!
Sarah Jessica Parker must have gone a season unbeaten, so she must be nailed on.
Now I’m Googling. His owner just didn’t wanna run in the Derby. He didn’t like it.
”He likely would’ve won the Triple Crown, but his owner didn’t care for the Kentucky Derby’s distance or time of year, and so Man ‘o War skipped the Derby. It seems odd now, but in 1920 the Triple Crown wasn’t really significant, and the Derby was not yet the Crown jewel.”
I’m guessing five. Seabiscuit, Man’o War, War Admiral, Secretariat and the one that won just last year or a couple of years ago.
I definitely know Affirmed won in 78 Steve Cauthen rode over here a lot too.
Seabiscuit never ran @Espiritus_Corvus. Neither did Man-O-War, which surprised the hell out of me. (See my posts above yours.) But those were good guesses. Also Seabiscuit trounced War Admiral the year after he won the triple crown.
