How does the app WhatsApp make money?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) March 29th, 2017 from iPhone

I figure they probably sell my information. I hope not.

They earn about $.99 for downloads and then $.99 for every year someone has an account.

^^How? From who? I didn’t pay anything for the App.

Easy. You sell the app to Facebook for $19 billion. After that it’s Facebook’s problem.

Seriously I don’t think they actually do make money from it at the moment.

@JLeslie they used to charge for the app before Facebook bought them

@JLeslie Always remember that If you’re not paying for a product/service, YOU are the PRODUCT, not the customer.

@gorillapaws That’s what I was assuming. Great way to put it.

@chyna It’s an app to call or text anywhere I the world free. You download it, then you out in the phone number of who you want to call and their country. They have to have the app too.

I’m pretty sure with my sprint plan I can pay $5 a month and call and text most countries I would need though, so possibly it’s better to do that.
