What is the reason for losing ability to respond spontaneously?

Asked by imrainmaker (8380points) April 6th, 2017

If someone has tendency to over think on any subject will he / she lose the ability to react in a appropriate manner spontaneously? It may happen that they might have to regret later due to this as multiple opportunities can be missed due to this.

Yea definitely happend, atleast with me, when I overthink something I tend to respond most appropriately so I respond patiently

Not in my case. I don’t think I overthink, but I do think things through carefully.

OTOH my husband is wildly spontaneous so I just have to go with it sometimes. However, it frustrates me when it should actually have involved some planning, but that didn’t happen, so we’re doing whatever but don’t have what we need to make it successful.

Why are you asking this? Did somebody say something?
You are trying to confuse me on purpose, just to see how I will react. Well, I will tell you this much, sometimes people overthink things, mentally work through every angle, every potential outcome. At times it may seem useless, and time consuming, but when something happens which requires fast thinking, that is when they shine.
Having worked through every possible scenario of many various events, and weighing potential outcomes, makes that person better at flashing through options when the situation requires them to think fast.

^^^ Are you overthinking this @Patty_Melt?

I have a friend who tends to over think things, to the point where he sometimes can’t actually make a decision. Other times, after much hashing and rehashing, he will sometimes make a decision or a choice and then immediately regret it. In his case I chalk it up to depression and anxiety.
