Is it possible to purchase Star Trek: the original series (remastered AND in 16:9 aspect ratio)?

Asked by NerdyKeith (5489points) April 16th, 2017

I’ve been trying to find one of Amazon but they don’t seem to specify the aspect ratio. I’ve seen it broadcast on television in 16:9, so I assume I must be able to purchase it that way.

I believe all DVD and Blu Ray are 16:9, so “knock your sox off.”

Check in the details area of the Amazon page for what you are looking for.

It may be broadcast in 16:9, but that is either distorted or it cuts off part of the original. Since the original Star Trek was formatted for a 4:3 television screen, best to get a DVD of that and then use formatting on your monitor to not distort but show black bars on the sides.

Yes. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Star-Trek-Original-Journey-Blu-ray/dp/B004E10QCI
The details about the aspect ratio are about half way down in the product details.

@Lightlyseared Cool, though the details show the original 4:3 rather than the 16:9 OP was asking for, though I agree with @zenvelo 16:9 would be weird.

@Zaku thanks. I missed that. Can’t imagine why anyone would want a pan and scan version. It would look awful.

Yeah, to get it from 4:3 to 16:9 full-screen it’d either have to pan & scan vertically (LOL) or be stretched to wide-o-vision (which disturbingly many people don’t seem to notice their TVs doing). When I play Star Trek TOS in Netflix, it does the civilized thing and shows black sides.

I don’t know if it’s available in widescreen, but i bloody well hope it isn’t! It was shot in a square format, to see it as a rectangle you would have to squeeze it down or chop off the top and bottom! Either way, it’s gonna look like crap!

Thanks for your input peeps. I’ve acquired a copy of the remastered version of the original series. I’m just going to use the “wide screen” view option on my TV. Yes it does stretch out the image. I know some people are not crazy about that, but I generally prefer it.
