If you are preparing a meal that will be cooked, would you worry about cutting your veggies with the same knife that you cut your meat with?

I don’t eat veggies so no. When I did I washed my knife constantly.

I would wash the knife after cutting the meat. Vegetables and meat cook for different amounts of time, and I would want to be sure the contaminants from the meat did not survive a shorter cooking time on the vegetables. (I tend to cook vegetables for short periods preserving the crispness.)

No I just clean the knife after I use it on the meat. Plenty of hot water and washing up liquid and it’s grand.

The only thing I’d really be concerned with is making sure the knife and the cutting board are clean when I put it away. Other than that, if I’m going to be cooking stuff right away I don’t care which knife I use for what.

I’ve always gotten a second knife. I use one knife for the raw meat and deal with it first. Then I get a second one for everything else. It’s always worked for me, so…yeah.

Only if the veggies are going to be eaten raw or just lightly cooked. If I’m roasting the veggies with the meat, it makes no difference.

Not if everything is to be cooked immediately. If I am prepping food to be cooked somewhere else, or much later, then I use a separate knife.

Darn tootin’ I would! They talk all the time on TV about cross contamination!

Cut the veggies first…duh.

I clean the knife between using on different ingredients, whether on meat first or on vegetable first. Too many instances of cross contamination between ingredients.

After all, it only takes about thirty seconds to clean the knife.

I do what @zenvelo does. Wash the knife before the next type of food.

I occasionally cut meat when I’m helping my mom fix food, like on Thanksgiving. Other than those few and far between occasions, I don’t cut meat, but I still wash the knife between ingredients such as cheese and fruit, or nuts and tofu.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, if it’s cheese or nuts that are going to be eaten uncooked then I certainly agree with that.

I would, do, use different knives. No, I would not cut my veggies with the same knife as the meat or fish uness I was roasting them all together.

jca's avatar

If I’m boiling the veggies, then I won’t clean the knife.

I wouldn’t do that. I also learned the other day, rather shockingly that vegetables carry a lot of bacteria too. (I didn’t know that I admit). So cutting veggies then meat is also not a great idea. In fact, the NHS here recommends washing hands in between cutting each set of vegetables. One of the worst cases of food poisoning came from the herb rocket, here in the UK.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, the way I figure it, if you’re going to cook the meat and the veggies, together or not, it isn’t that important.

Of course veggies have bacteria. They are living things. All living things carry bacteria.

No, it’s the shit that ends up ON other shit…. it doesn’t have to be veggies or meat. Anything that comes into contact with the ground or bird shit… it’s all contaminated.

Dutchess_III's avatar

^^^But doesn’t mean it’s deadly!

Seek's avatar

I mean, if the knife has obvious viscera on it, I’ll rinse it off, but I’m not crazy about it.

I’m much more careful and systematic if I’m cooking for other people, but for just us… Nah. I haven’t lost anyone yet.

cazzie's avatar

@Dutchess_III No, not necessarily. But under the worst circumstances, it can be. Kids have been killed by infected ground beef. Folks have been killed or hospitalised for contaminated spinach.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yes Cazzie. Food can be dangerous. But if you have infected ground beef or spinach, y’all gonna get sick. Using different knives isn’t going to change that.

I’m probably a bit more extreme than most. shocker

Not only do I use different knives for meat and veg. I use different utensils for meat.

I made burritos the other night. Making the meat went down like this.

Plop a pound of ground beef in a pan on medium heat. Break it up with a spatula and brown it. Drain the grease off. Add seasoning and some water and stir. Throw spoon in sink. Wait five minutes and get a new spoon. Stir and throw spoon in sink. Wait five minutes and get a new spoon. Stir and throw spoon in sink. Wait five minutes and get a new spoon. Stir and throw spoon in sink. Wait five minutes and get a new spoon. Stir and throw spoon in sink.

Place ground beef on paper towels.

Eat a burrito.
