Is it ok just to eat more servings of fruit and little or no vegetables for my 5-10 servings of fruit and vegatables?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24945points) April 30th, 2017

My dietitian wants me to eat 5 – 10 servings of fruits and vegetables. Or half my plate. Is it ok to eat fruit for my servings of fruit and vegetables? I have some frozen broccoli in my freezer just in case. Does fruit filled yogurt count as a fruit serving?

Fruit filled yogurt is a dairy serving.

10 servings of fruit a day is a metric fuckton of sugar.

Broccoli is a fine choice of vegetable. It’s high in iron and fiber.

You need to eat both fruits AND vegetables. Fruit alone will give you too much sugar. Some of the nutrients that you need are in the vegetables.

@RedDeerGuy1 fruit contains a lot of sugar. You need more vegetables than fruit. Why don’t you want to eat vegetables? Why not ask a question about how you can boost your vegetable intake easily? For some tasty veggie recipes that aren’t hard to cook.

@Earthbound_Misfit I am used to eating meat.

So you could perhaps look at making stews and soups. Also, you can make things like bean salad which are simple to prepare, very nutritious and will last a few days in your fridge. Check out Sauerkraut too. So good for you. Put some on your plate next to your steak (or whatever). Ask a question. I’m sure people like @Kardamom will be able to suggest a million veggie recipes for tasty ways to increase your veggie intake. Your meat portion should only be as big as the palm of your hand. You should fill the rest of your plate with veggies.

@Earthbound_Misfit Next time I go shopping I will ask my outreach worker to help me pick out some more veggies. Thanks.

No, not really. They make packages of mixed vegetables that you can mix into your other dishes. I make a goulash that has all 4 food groups and is DELISH!

@kritiper I can get mixed veggies from the frozen section of my store. Thanks for suggesting.

Good plan @RedDeerGuy1! And yes on @kritiper‘s suggestion. The other thing you can do is grate up some zucchini and/carrot and if you’re having a soup or something like that, mix more veggies in. You won’t notice them when they cook down. Good luck with it.

Not much on veggies and fruit, more of a beef guy myself. I was up in Montana, and bagged a bison. I bagged it to go away, but it was persistent.

Got broccoli cauliflower and carrots

Don’t know if this will help, but I’m trying, okay?? (lol!)
If you eat much tuna salad sandwiches, like I do, you can add freshly chopped onion and dill pickle to the mix. Sometimes I just add dill pickle relish. And then add a big slab of fresh lettuce because lettuce makes many (not ALL!) sandwiches taste better! (I once made a ham and cheese sandwich with lettuce (and real mayo). I was SO hungry and the sandwich with lettuce tasted SO GOOD that I was halfway through it before I realized I had forgotten the ham and cheese!!!)
