Is my avocado doomed?
I cut a piece off of the top and It was still hard. I put in the fridge. Is it doomed? Will it get ripe in the fridge? I also cut around the middle and couldn’t get the pit out.

The next time you buy an avocado, leave it whole, and do not put it in the fridge. Leave it on the counter. It is ripe when it’s slightly squishy to the touch. If it’s very squishy, it’s overripe but still edible. Don’t cut it until you’re ready to eat it.
I’m not sure what will happen to the one you have now since you cut it, but it will not ripen in the fridge.
Another thing about avocados: don’t remove the pit unless you are eating the whole avocado at one time. The pit keeps the unused portion from browning.
When cutting an avocado. hold it so the pointy end is up; put the knife blade in there, and slice to the bottom. If you are using a half or whole avocado, continue cutting on the longitudinal axis until you have circumnavigated the whole avocado.
Grab the two halves with different hands and begin to twist; the halves will separate with one holding the pit.
If you are only wanting a smaller portion of the avocado. make two slices along longitudes from one end to the other, and remove the wedge of avocado ready to use!.
Also…if you put an unripe Avocado in a paper bag it will ripen more quickly than if it is left out. Yes, never put an Avocado in the fridge. They only ripen at room temperatures.
@all Thanks great answers : )
Once you cut it, it’s pretty much fubar. Next time. give it more time. Or Google ways to ripen in an oven or microwave if you have a guaca-mergency. ;) Happy Cinco de Mayo!
