When is the last time you had a disaster in your kitchen, and what was it?

I thought of this today after spilling a container of cut watermelon off of my refrigerator shelf and onto the floor. Not so much of a disaster, but a little mess.

Once I set lamb chops too high up in the oven, next to the burners and they caught on fire. I didn’t realize that just keeping the oven closed with it off would make the fire go out. I turned it off but only after calling 911. The fire department came. Disaster averted.

When I was about 18 I was broiling steak in my parents’ oven and it caught on fire. The neighbor, a chef, was outside. I called him and he came up and threw salt on the fire.

When I was young, my best friend came from a family of seven kids (big Irish family). Every night the mom would make mashed potatoes with a five pound bag of potatoes. One night when I was there for dinner, she was grabbing the milk to put in the potatoes and instead, she grabbed the dish detergent. The whole pot of potatoes was ruined and she had no more, so she made oatmeal to accompany the entree.

The last big disaster was a few years ago when I poured hot oil into a glass bowl and it shattered all over the counter spewing oil everywhere! What-a-mess! It never crossed my mind the bowl couldn’t handle it, clearly it could not.
My most recent disaster was in my living room a few days ago when I was working on gift bags for a horse show and had poured a tall glass of beer to enjoy while I was working.

I was sitting on the floor on my lovely, newer, throw rug and got up to go out to the garage and get more supplies. I consciously made a mental note to myself to be careful to not kick my glass over and then, what did I do? Yep, walked back in and kicked my full glass of beer all over my rug and other supplies! I was so damn mad!

Took me about 20 minutes to sop it all up, wash my rug down, wipe off my sample bags. What a freaking disaster!
I also, once, years ago, spaced out and reached into the over to remove a glass baking dish of chicken breasts with my bare hands! Forgot to put on the over mitts. It was like a cartoon moment I imagine if someone had been filming the moment.

I stood there for about 2 seconds until I realized my hands were burning and then dropped and shattered the entire baking dish on the kitchen floor! :-/
I was lucky I didn’t sustain serious burns.

It’s not food related but it did happen in the kitchen. The glass front of the washing machine catastrophically failed. During the spin cycle.

Where do I begin… put it this way, if I ever wrote a book called “My disasters in the kitchen” = instant best-seller. I was working on a very long paper on a “mundane” night. I haven’t slept properly in days and I just passed out somehow. Before my adventure to lala-land, I put a vegetarian pizza in the oven…. I woke up six hours later with smoke everywhere. The result was this…. link

Do I get the award for most-awesome-disaster-in-the-kitchen?

@Tbag Haha, that same thing happened to me years ago in my early 20’s. Had a little too much to drink, put a pizza in the oven and fell asleep. Woke to black smoke everywhere and a pizza that looked like it had been the victim of a volcanic eruption. Exactly the same as your photo. lol

@Coloma Hahah. The pizza looks like something from outer space! Did you throw that piece of art straight up? Or did you keep it on a shelf like I did for a while?

I threw it out and was very sad I had no dinner. haha Hey, you could have shellacked it for preservation purposes. maybe open a museum of burned food. :-p

Depends on the disaster.

I was cutting chicken for chicken salad and sliced off the top ¼ inch of the ring finger of my left hand. That was disastrous temporarily.

I poured orange juice on my cereal by accident one morning too. A breakfast disaster.

I put poptarts in a microwave and accidentally set it for 30:00 instead of 30 seconds (microwave buttons were sensitive and I wasn’t used to it). Walked away to help my mother with something and forgot until I smelled something burning. The filling on the inside was gone.

This is a while ago, but one time I put dish soap in the dishwasher by accident and bubbles were coming out from the sides in volume!

I broke a glass on the kitchen floor about a month ago.

Last night I was pouring soup from a pan to a bowl, and the liquid ran back against the pot, sibrgat it didn’t all get in the bowl. Unfortunately, it didn’t all go in the counter, but fell down between the stove and the counter also. Ugh, I still need to have my husband pull the stove out so I can clean it up.

The last recipe screw up was forgetting the sugar when I made macaroons.

@jca LOL. No stereotypes, but a big Irish family and potatoes. ~

@JLeslie I hate when that happens, such a PITA!

Finals are coming up and that also means I have a ton of things due. The other night I came home around midnight and began to cook dinner. I zoned out a bit and realized there was some smoke, though a very thin layer, so I turned the fan on. But the finicky smoke detector went off. Not a light went on in any of my roommates’ rooms, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t wake them. What a terrible roommate I was that night.

@Tbag Wanna play frisbee?

When I quit the theater I had been playing the stock market for a few years. This was back in 1999 and I had nice little chunk of change saved up. So I was able to do about six months of just parties, drugs, video games and skateboarding. I was living in a studio apartment and rent was 250 a month.

But to the kitchen disaster. I was going to make some pasta one night. So I put on some water to boil. Spaced it and passed out. So I wake up 12 hours later wondering WTF. I go the stove and it is red hot with a empty Teflon pot that was bubbles and had turned blue. My breathing was labored. It took a few weeks for my lungs to start functioning normally.

I used to keep a big metal Folger’s can for grease on top of my fridge. One day I went to pull it down and somehow the lid came off and it spilled all over me. It was full of nasty, rancid, horrible, old, rotted grease. And I was pregnant. And the kitchen had kitchen carpet in it (not our idea. It was that way when we moved in.)
After I stopped vomiting you’ve never seen a carpet come out so fast.
