Do you use expensive hairspray, or do you feel the cheap brand is good enough?

Asked by jca (36062points) June 2nd, 2017

I just read an article yesterday that said expensive hairspray is better for your hair and doesn’t leave buildup.

I buy not the cheapest brand but not the most expensive brand, either. I know expensive brands can be $10—$20 per bottle. Mine is about $5.

What do you think?

Why use it at all?

I have natural hair; I don’t have to spray it on.

All you can do is try it out and compare. I don’t use hairspray, but I do use leave-in conditioner. I didn’t like the cheaper kind, so I tried a couple of more expensive ones until I found one I like. Some of them weren’t worth the price, but the one I settled on has been worth paying twice as much for.

I so rarely use hairspray that I use the cheapest I can find when I do. A light vinegar rinse would always remove any build up.

Cheap hair spray, cheap shampoo.

I’ve always gotten compliments on my hair. My best friend from HS is a hair dresser. Once she mentioned how great my hair was and asked what shampoo I used. I told her (cheapest brand) and she said, “Oh, you can’t use that! That’s not good for your hair! You have to use this stuff!” I was like, just left scratching my head.
She wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. In the 80s we were always streaking and perming my hair, all at the same time. About the 3rd time she said, “You have amazing hair! Most people who have had this done so often have to cut it all off and start over!”
I was like, “WTF? Thanks for telling me that ahead of time!”

@canidmajor You’re going to lump my answer in with the first two non-responses? At least I was trying to be helpful by conveying my experiences with a similar product.

I use expensive mousse, and usually expensive hairspray, but sometimes I buy the cheaper hairsprays. I usually have a bottle of both, and depending on what I’m doing I use one of the other. Like if I have my hair pulled back in a ponytail I use the cheap stuff.

Also, when I have extensions in my hair I use very little product. Amazing what having lots of thick hair can do. It’s a different world if you’re accustomed to have thin dry hair. Screw all those lectures about products and hair dryers damaging your hair blah blah. It’s easy for people with thick hair to say that, they simply don’t need to use all the products. I can say with certainty the biggest problem my hair has is my thyroid and genes. Not my hair dryer.

Also, I almost always use “cheap” shampoo and conditioner. I love the L’Oréal I use. L’Oréal Total Repair 5. It’s great for the dryness, but doesn’t weigh my hair down, and helps not get so many tangles.

I don’t think many of us would consider L’Oréal cheap. I mean their own slogan brags about that.

@Dutchess_III It’s $5 each shampoo and conditioner at retail, I usually get it for less on sale. I think I once bought a really large size that’s cheaper per oz, but I haven’t seen that in the store lately. That isn’t cheap like Suave, but it’s still drug store prices not salon prices like $20 Paul Mitchell or Redkin.

I do think most people would think L’Oréal is fairly cheap actually. Maybe I’m completely clueless.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Mine is $1.00 give or take.

JLeslie's avatar

^^That’s really cheap, so let’s call mine moderate if you want.

Do you like your shampoo? If so what brand is it? I’ve tried some really cheap brands and they never work for me.

Coloma's avatar

I no longer use it as I no longer have bangs that I would give a quick spritz but when I did use it I bought the aerosol cans, hate the plastic pump bottles that often clog and come out in a squirt and used inexpensive brands. White rain, aquanet, etc.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Shampoo is shampoo. It all does the same thing @JLeslie. I like my hair. The shampoo I use makes no difference to me. None.
I use whatever is the least expensive. Sometimes it’s Suave, sometimes it’s other brands that are on sale.

JLeslie's avatar

Suave is too drying for my hair. There are differences in how shampoos coat the hair. I don’t believe they make hair grow thicker or anything like that, but they can make hair less tangly, that sort of thing. Conditioner is probably the most important part of the equation.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well when I quit getting compliments on my hair I’ll start worrying about silly things like that I guess.

JLeslie's avatar

I’m just telling you Suave doesn’t work for my hair. The reason I know is because I tried it. I bought it.

AshlynM's avatar

Never use hairspray, only dry shampoo when I feel my hair is getting too oily.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I have never used dry shampoo. Does it really work? Why do you use it?

jca's avatar

I find one difference between cheap shampoo/conditioner and expensive is that the expensive is thicker. The cheaper stuff is more watery. With hairspray, since it’s not something that we touch, I have no idea whether the consistency of a cheap version is different than the consistency of an expensive version.

AshlynM's avatar

Yes, it works for me. It removes oil and grease from hair. I only use dry shampoo to stretch out the time in between hair washings. I like it alot. It also gives great volume.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Hm. I think I tried it in the 70s. I may have to revisit @AshlynM.
