When you're cooking for people, do you take the less choice bits for yourself and leave the best for the rest?

Like, if you’re cooking up a bunch of bacon and you burn a few pieces. Do you take the burned pieces to eat, and leave the unburned for the people you’ve been cooking for?

Always. I had a friend in high school who would always talk about the “chef’s prerogative” and how it entitled him to whatever size and quality portion he wanted since he was the one cooking and plating the food. He wasn’t exactly wrong, but the attitude (and his pride in announcing it) never ceased to bother me. So I have done my best to do the opposite if and when I am the one preparing a meal.

Generally, or I let them pick.

One of the best ways to balance some situations and make them fair is to have one person prepare the selection of a thing, and the other person(s) choose from that selection first.

Interesting. I wonder if it’s more of a girl thing to put yourself second? Or is it a question of politeness?

When I’m cooking, there are no “less choice bits”.

Ohhh! The Perfect Cook! Never gets distracted by children and such. Never.

Always. If I’ve done it right, my ego won’t let me do otherwise.

I take all the good bits, and the others get the telephone number of the pizza delivery service.

My brother and his wife were getting ready to grill out one day. They had the steaks on the counter and both walked out to check the grill. They came back in and their dog had one of the steaks on the floor licking it. He told his wife “too bad the dog got your steak.”

@ragingloli Is their good pizza in Germany?

Dutchess_III's avatar

@chyna Ha ha ha ha!! I would have cooked it up anyway. Rinsed off and cooked it.

and skinned and disemboweled.

@RedDeerGuy1
If you like Bratwurst and Sauerkraut Pizza.

LuckyGuy's avatar

Always. I eat the ones that are burned, broken, or raw. (Or if they touched the wrong condiment or sauce).

chyna's avatar

@LuckyGuy That is very important. Dry food shouldn’t touch wet food or sauces.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I’ll take the burned bits @LuckyGuy!

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@ragingloli Yes. As long as the bratwurst doesn’t have smoke flavor. I like sauerkraut.

elbanditoroso's avatar

I’m trying to imagine why I would do what you suggested.

JLeslie's avatar

Yes, but I know people who don’t. I do this even between my husband and me.

ucme's avatar

We have staff for that…

LuckyGuy's avatar

We have apple trees with more apples than I can possibly give away. Yet I will always eat the imperfect ones.

When I grill grub, I keep the best for myself. When it comes to outdoor cooking, it’s every man (or woman) for themselves,

Dutchess_III's avatar

@elbanditoroso Let’s say you’re cooking some bacon for 4 people. You accidentally burn 2 or 3 pieces. Do you take those for yourself, and leave the correctly cooked pieces for whomever you’re cooking for, or do you take 2 or 3 of the correctly cooked pieces for yourself and leave the burned bacon for someone else? I find it interesting that you can’t imagine doing that.
I also find @NomoreY_A‘s response interesting.
If it was your wife or girlfriend cooking, and she took the best for herself, how would you feel?

NomoreY_A's avatar

I’d let her have it… the best, that is. I’m not really a jerk, I just play one on the internet.

Hmm. Now I want to try bratwurst and sauerkraut pizza… Oh hey it exists . .
