I think it’s not always easy to say, because some people will lie right to your face and look you in the eye while they do it.
When their stories change from telling to telling.
When their lips are moving.
Long stories, silly excuses, intricate details in explaining and don’t forget that gut feeling you get when you know that somebody is not being direct with you.
When their eyes move to their left.
Inconsistencies in their story. When you ask for details they will look away while thinking of an answer.
I’m not good at detecting lies in facial cues and tone. And to be honest some people are so good at lying that they hardly give away any warning sign True story. I have encountered a bunch of liars like that. But I can detect lies if the person is so dishonest their main communication mode is lie. Because they are lying, they don’t bother to remember their stories much, so they will slip up one way or another. The trick is to know when.
They answer questions you didn’t ask. You could call it over-explaining. They either have rehearsed their lie so much that everything is said at the first chance, or they make it up as they go when asked a question and they ramble. They don’t listen well to the question you asked, because lying takes more effort than telling the truth.
Example: where are you? I’m with Cindy. I did ask who I asked where. I’m pretty sure that person isn’t with Cindy.
When things just aren’t adding up, inconsistencies, and sometimes it goes as far as the liar seems to be trying to manipulate you if it’s someone like your SO.
Some people have a “tell” when they lie. Many people don’t.
When they swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help them God, and also to uphold the Constitution on Inauguration Day….
@flutherother, to tie in with what @filmfann said: Conventional wisdom says that when a person’s eyes look to the left, that means they’re accessing the right side of their brain, which is the side that controls imagination.
Conversely, if the look to the right they’re accessing the left side which is the logical, analytical side where memories are held. So if they look away they could be simply trying to remember the facts, not making something up. Depends on which side of the brain they’re accessing.
I wonder if it’s just the opposite, though, for people who are left side dominant, as in left handed, as in right brain dominant.
