What is the one song that always puts you in a good mood?

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun – Cyndi Lauper. It always makes me jump up and dance. Fine at home, a little inappropriate in the dentist’s office.

Country Roads by John Denver. It’s about my state, WV, so I might be partial.

St. Louis Tickle. This exact version, played by Dave Van Ronk. I want this on a loop at my funeral, in between bouts of classical. I love classical music and opera, and when nobody’s listening I sing along with them, but there’s nothing in the repertoire that raises my mood like this one.

There is a genre that has always been my go-to music when I’m down. Classical Spanish guitar. It’s bright a beautiful with an undercurrent of Latin melancholy to make it real. It is festive, but also recognizes the hardness of life. And there is an urgency in it—an urgency that we either use it or lose it. It’s the perfect music for depression.
