Why do Christians always ask you if you've been hurt, when you leave the church?

Asked by NomoreY_A (5546points) July 1st, 2017

No, I’ve never been “hurt”, not even slightly wounded, by anyone in any church at any time. Why cant they accept the fact that some people…. just don’t buy it?

No clue as to what you are talking about. I’m a Christian and have never asked, nor been asked if I or someone else has been hurt.

@NomoreY_A Never heard of this before. No idea why anyone would do that.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I don’t attend church very often but have never been asked that by anyone there.

Fundamentalist Christian pastors often use this reasoning to explain why people leave the church.

And in a way, they’re right. Record number of millenials have left the church because they feel that the church demonizes the LGBT community

Thanks for explaining it @rockfan .

@rockfan Can you site a source?
Because it’s easy to say that, but to tell us where you got that information is another thing.

rockfan's avatar

I don’t have any specific source that cites people using that reasoning, I’ve heard it from many people around the country that have joined Skeptic organizations. A lot of devout Christians don’t want to face the facts that people leave the church for intellectual reasons.

Maybe they mean that they assume the person’s faith was tested when something shitty happened.

si3tech's avatar

@NomoreY_A Perhaps I did not understand the question. You meant “leave the church” as in permanently. And I can’t speak to that.

Jeruba's avatar

Do they? Everywhere, always, all of them? How odd.

I just don’t like kneeling and singing. I only go to church
for weddings , funerals and advice. I was hurt plenty by the Catholic school system by teacher’s.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

I’ve never had this. The vicar glared at me, but he didn’t actually ask why I wasn’t attending services. I was a kid at the time (13ish). Nobody has ever asked me why I stopped attending church.

jca's avatar

I’ve never ben asked that question or heard of anyone being asked that question.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Also it would be self-serving for me to sing the praises of God when I wonder if I am him. Or at least his Avatar. I am at least a false (g)od small g. One of the ones who God is jealous about . From my astral traveling and immortality.

You must associate with way too many Christians. I have known many but never been asked that question. Try putting a lot more distance between yourself and them.

Darth_Algar's avatar

Because the one who ask that question are narcissistic to believe that there’s no way that anyone could honestly not believe in their imaginary friend.

Aster's avatar

I’ve never heard of this but the rude, nosy, dishonest remark when you walk into a church and are handed a program , “we missed you last Sunday” makes me want to say, “that’s a lie! You did not miss me.” But of course I never say that. I just answer the remark with why I wasn’t there and resent being put in that position. But actually, I’ve given up church completely. Yay!

JLeslie's avatar

^^Maybe reply “then you’re lucky I’m here today. I hate to think I caused you any distress.” But, I guess better to rise above, and not be obnoxious back.

jca's avatar

I’d just respond “thank you” and not feel obligated to defend myself.

Aster's avatar

@jca that is a fantastic response!

They can ask
Where does it say you must answer

Dutchess_III's avatar

No one ever asked me. I had an ex friend who is a devout Christian who got wind that I wasn’t a believer. She attributed it to Satan stealing me away, and promptly unfriended me after 48 years of friendship.

NomoreY_A's avatar

@Dutchess_III Seems to me you’re better off without those kinds of “Friends”. Devil take her. Rhetorically speaking.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Oh yeah! She was a fundy, for sure.

NomoreY_A's avatar

Sounds like…that’s one reason I don’t like Facebook. All that friended-unfriended crap. Gee, if we cant agree on every issue, I don’t like you any more. Grow the F up, people. Put your big boy/big girl drawers on and get a damn grip.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

Tuts. I’d unfriend you if I could for that @NomoreY_A!~

NomoreY_A's avatar

Then I stand before you In shame and disgrace, but defiant. I just think it’s nonsense. : )

Darth_Algar's avatar

Oh I disagree with plenty of my friends on many things. But there’s just some who’s views turn out to be so repugnant that I no longer wish to have any association with them.
