What is the most realistic fictional couple?

Asked by Sneki2 (2452points) July 6th, 2017

Tv shows and sitcoms, films, comics, books, whatever, as long as the couple is fictional.

Which couple do you find the most realistic, and an example of a functional, healthy relationship?
The couple can, but does not have to be married.

Explain why.

Realistic or functional? I’m not sure they go together. In real life I find some level of dysfunction in every family I think. When I can’t find the dysfunction, I assume it still goes in behind closed doors. It helps me to think that way.

I think the show Roseanne was realistic, and the family unit functioned ok, but it wasn’t the best example of how a family should be. The parents kind of screw up helping their older daughter go to college. That same daughter runs away and gets married very young.

Cosby was a very nice example, but of course it’s tainted by what the real Cosby did.

Ray Ramono was fairly realistic I think, although his mother’s interference was a little exaggerated.

Archie and Edith Bunker.

I thought Family Ties (the show with Michael J. Fox) was pretty realistic in that it wasn’t too unrealistic. Very ordinary, middle class household.

I always related to Paul and Jamie Buchman (Paul Reiser, Helen Hunt) on Mad About You. They remind me of my wife and I.

We too were city-centric DINKS for a good while. We also relate to each other similarly.

Of course, they are northeast US, big city specific — which I know doesn’t resonate with everyone.

Now, their fictional New York apartment… that was unrealistic. Did you see the size of that bedroom?!

Trump and Melanie.

Far and away, Darren and Samantha on ‘Bewitched’.

Darren was a gullible stooge who took regular shit from his nitwit boss, Larry.
Samantha got whatever she wanted, simply by twitching her nose.

And they even had a world-class busybody neighbor, Mrs. Kravitz.

This all sounds incredibly (and exactly) like our house….

R2-D2 and C-3PO

They bicker constantly, just like an old married couple.

Bob and Emily Hartley on The Bob Newhart Show (1972–1978, not the later show Newhart) come to mind.

@Darth_Algar Who says old married couples bicker constantly? I enjoy running around with my wife, just like when we were young and just starting out. I don’t even like having to go anywhere with out her. If I run to the convenience store, I’ll offer to buy her a coke just to get her to come with me.

@NomoreY_A You don’t like going anywhere without her? That’s a little scary. Even when I was with my first love and infatuated beyond belief, I didn’t want to always be with him.

Homer and Marge Simpson, especially in seasons 5 through 7. Granted it’s a cartoon, but the dialogue between them was always spot on.

I would say Ray and Debra Barone from “Everybody Loves Raymond”.

JLeslie's avatar

^^Because, especially if you are from an Italian or Jewish family a lot of Everybody loves Raymond is like reality. Lol. I wrote the same sitcom up above.

Let’s see what Rockfan says.

You mean, men are stupid momma boys, their wives are stressed out housewives, and in-laws consist of a control freak and an abusive grumpy old man?
Not to mention an awkward brother.

Come on, explain your statement.

rockfan's avatar

@JLeslie A little confused, what is it that you want me to react to?

JLeslie's avatar

@rockfan That’s my mistake. I should have said @imrainmaker.
