Could you help me to change the name Elizabeth?

Asked by LornaLove (10037points) July 15th, 2017

I know there are shortened versions of Elizabeth, like Liz, Betty etc., could you help me to find another name within the name Elizabeth. It can be as unusual or as different as you like.

‘Zabeth’ would be pretty cool, I think….

Liza would be a nice tag.

How about Bethel, or Thebe?

Soubresaut's avatar

These aren’t unusual, but “Elle,” “Ellie,” “Beth,” and “Lizzie” come to mind.

I like “Liza,” too, like filmfann mentioned. And I guess you could make it Lih-zah instead of Lie-zah by adding an extra “z”: Lizza. You could also add back the E and make it “Eliza.” And I guess “Elise” isn’t too far away at that point.

So, also: Liza, Eliza, Lizza, and Elise

Edit: I see RedDeerGuy1 beat me to Beth!

@flutherother How would you pronounce Thebe?

2davidc8's avatar

I once knew a little girl named Lisveth, pronounced with the accent on the second syllable. I kinda like that version.

Sorry to dissent but I like Betty. It’s rare these days.

But in the spirit of the question, I shall say LZ. “I am LZ”.

My sisters name is Elizabeth. My parents called her Betty, but I called her Beebee.

I just wish people would stick with Elizabeth.

You could shorten Betsy down even more and just get ‘Bets’.

Just for fun, I used to call my friend, whose name is Elizabeth, Eliza Bethany.

I like Liz the best for a short for Elizabeth. Although, I feel the full name is so pretty that it’s probably worth the effort to say the whole thing.

I think everyone above hit all the nicknames.

Liz, Beth, Bess, Bessy, Betsy, Lizbeth, Bette, Betty, El, Elle, Lizzy.

Elspeth is the Scottish version of Elizabeth. Elsie is the short version of that

Zilla.

@jca reminded me of the separate name, “Zelia” (Zeel-ee-uh). I always thought it was a pretty name, but I’ve only encountered it once.

PullMyFinger's avatar

@Soubresaut Oh man, I’ve never heard that name before, but I LOVE it. In fact, I wish we’d named our daughter that.

Zelia MyFinger….........wow….

And I’m pretty sure that my wife’s ovaries don’t work anymore….

Name variations have a rich history, and Elizabeth is a prime example. Some of the variants are merely shortened versions, known linguistically as chopped forms. Examples would include _El, Liza, Beth. Some are the result of transliteration between various languages, some are a combination of the two, some have a “y”, or “ie”, or something similar syllable attached to the end.

The Wikipedia link provided by @Espiritus_Corvus (repeated here) is a good resource for some examples.
