First of all, I do not know rock drummers at all. Most of the people I listen to probably have a drum machine, not a human at all.
But I have friends and relatives who cross a couple of generations and they talk about this stuff occasionally.
This topic came up at my July 4th cookout.

Worst by what standard?
Personally, I’d say Lars from Metallica, but it has nothing to do with his abilities as a musician, his crusade against napster back in the day completely killed their music for me.
Lars Ulrich, of Metallica. The man cannot fulfill the most basic function of a drummer, maintaining a steady beat, at all.
Dave Grohl of Nirvana and Foo Fighters. Sloppy technique and he consistently has bad timing during the live concerts in the 90’s. But he’s probably improved since then
Meg White had an incredibly simplistic style to her drumming. That said, she was legitimately one half of a great and influential band. I dunno. Can something be bad if it sells? Isn’t that kinda the definition of good?
@Smashley
Completely disagree, the Transformers series has made billions of dollars and those movies are far from good
@Smashley
Simplistic is fine. Sloppy playing and not being able to keep time isn’t.

Marketing can force a product into profitability but something doesn’t last on the top of the charts unless it’s managed to really connect with many people. Even if I know something sucks, aren’t I simply overruled by the masses? I think so.
What is “good”? Doesn’t it just mean “appealing to me”?
Sorry, Ringo….you’re not getting off the hook today.
In the late 60s, an interviewer mentioned to John Lennon that Ringo wasn’t the best drummer in the world.
Lennon replied, “He’s not even the best drummer in the band…..”
However Ringo is, and was, a much better drummer than many, perhaps Lennon himself (assuming that Lennon wasn’t being completely tongue-in-cheek), like to give him credit for.
Lennon was referring to McCartney, whose drumming skills can be enjoyed on his first solo album (on which he played all of the instruments), and also on the single ‘The Ballad of John and Yoko’, on which John handled both rhythm and lead guitars, and Paul played bass and drums.
And I knew a dozen people in high school who were better drummers than Ringo Starr (aka The Luckiest Man Who Ever Lived)
