According to this webpage, it was Thomas Savery in 1698. In 1769, James Watt patented his improvements to the steam engine and his design went on to become the “dominant design for all modern steam engines”. I remember learning about Watt when I was at school because his invention was so important to the industrial revolution that really changed the modern world. Given I grew up in Manchester that was the epicentre of the Industrial Revolution, this was important local history.
The Greek with the sphere over a fire with steam jets to rotate it. Was that Heron?
I think James Watt made big improvements and maybe made the first designs to be practical for getting work done. Pumping water out of mines was the first common use.
Update: I googled, I mixed up James Watt with an earlier inventor, he came a few decades later. I’ll let others fill in the name.
Many men have worked on steam power over the years and the work of one built upon the work of his predecessors. Thomas Newcomen made the first practical steam engine but its use was limited to pumping in mines. James Watt’s improvements to the steam engine used steam at above atmospheric pressure and his machines could be used in a huge range of industrial applications bringing in the industrial revolution. If one man is to get the credit I would go with James Watt.
@johnpowell @ragingloli I don’t get it – please enlighten.
Without any googling, I’d say Leonardo Da Vinci invented the steam engine.
Gabe Newell created the online videogame platform known as “Steam”.
