Do you have tattoos?

Asked by imrainmaker (8380points) July 26th, 2017

Always wondered what drives people to do that with their body? What was yours? What is the first thought that comes to your mind when you see heavily tattooed person on his / her body? I know it’s really not my business but I’m curious to know why if you wanna share?

Nooooo! I’m repulsed by tattoos, and I’m sure that my saying so will offend many people.

Coloma's avatar

Yes, I have 2. A tiny black and white cat walking towards you, front paws crossed with its tail curled up behind it on my right hip and an anklet of two purple morning glories with a vine twined halfway around my right ankle.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

No
But I was scheduled at a “Tat shop” but my Oncologist who was giving me Chemo said NO that was 33 years ago.

Sneki2's avatar

I don’t ave any, but it’d be rad if I had a tattoo. I really like Glagolitic alphabet. It’s like an alien script. I totally wouldn’t mind a short phrase in Proto Slavic, written in Glagolitic.
Or only the grapheme in my profile image.

As for people with tats, I don’t mind them, especially of they’re well done and stylish.

I do have more liking to small tattoos than sleeves or anything big, though, but I in general, I don’t hate it.

ragingloli's avatar

Yes. I have a tattoo of my face…
on my face.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Nope not a one,the only thing I want in my life forever is Mrs Squeeky, everything else I want to be able to opt out of.

filmfann's avatar

I do not.
I have 3 kids, and they all have tattoos. Plus, my daughter works as a body piercer.
Why do they do it? I’m guessing self expression.

cookieman's avatar

I do not have one, but I would like one. Maybe if I can decide on a design.

I have designed a couple for other people.

If a tattoo or series of them are skillfully done – visually impressive, I usually find them beautiful on people. Even if they have a lot of them.

I only dislike tattoos that are poorly done.

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

No. According to maritime tradition, I’ve earned a couple for crossing certain latitudes solo, so I’ve been tempted. But so far, no. My badges of honor are my many scars. Who am I going to impress? The coroner?

Mimishu1995's avatar

Used to. A lot! As a kid! <evil laugh>

You just remind me of my wild youth. There were those things called “sticker tatoos” being sold among the kids and they were really popular. You just stuck the sticker on your body, then either pressed down as hard as possible or poured water on it, and you got yourself a colorful tatoo. There was no risk involved too, as the tatoos wore out when you washed yourself with lots of water. There were a lot of images to choose from, from silly things like cartoon characters to really “adult” things like forest animals. A way to appear cool and get a feel of being an adult back then.

Sneki2's avatar

^ Haha I remember those. They sold it with bubble gums here. I wasn’t allowed to wear them, bit I remember those well.

Mimishu1995's avatar

@Sneki2 Hey! I didn’t know they sold those things in your place too. I thought it was something unique in my country.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

@Tropical_Willie I was scheduled at a “Tat shop” but my Oncologist who was giving me Chemo said NO

You missed out on the most bad-ass tattoo of them all.

Kardamom's avatar

I don’t have any tattoos. I don’t care for them.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@Call_Me_Jay It was a 6 inch high by 6 inch wide compass rose something like this.

On my left shoulder blade.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

I have no tattoos, but I kind of want to get two.

I donated a kidney, but I am still registered as an organ donor.

If I get hit by a bus I think it would be funny for the EMTs to see “Kidney Here” and “No Kidney Here” on my torso like the “No Step” stencils on aircraft.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

I saw one of the loveliest tattoos I’ve seen, and perhaps the only thing I might think of having tattooed on my body, on a Facebook post from a former jelly. It was some of her father’s writing that she’d had tattooed on her arm. I could absolutely see me having some special words written by my dad or my husband or a child tattooed, in their handwriting, on my body. Beyond that, there’s nothing I feel so attached to I’d want to permanently represent it on my body.

Coloma's avatar

Wow..I’m the only one here out of 12, so far, with a couple little tattoos? haha

MrGrimm888's avatar

I would be considered heavily tattooed… They all mean something. But it isn’t for anyone but me…

What do I think when I see a heavily tattooed person? Depends on the tattoos… What they are, and their location on the body….

It’s easily one of the oldest forms of personal expression…

flutherother's avatar

I have no tattoos and no desire to get one. I don’t like them.

LuckyGuy's avatar

No and I have no plans to ever get one.

Funny story – A close friend of ours has a son who body builds. He has an incredible body. A few years ago he had a large scorpion tattooed on one of his very impressive pecs. Why a scorpion? He incorrectly thought it was his birth sign.

canidmajor's avatar

I have six. Each one commemorates a circumstance, a person, or an event. I have gotten them over the span of about 40 years.

I think it’s a shame if someone has badly done or just plain ugly ink, but I also am sometimes startled by people’s fashion choices.

@Love_my_doggie, I don’t know any tattooed people that would care or be offended that you are repulsed by tattoos. We only care or are offended if you say so, unsolicited, to our faces. And not by your feelings of repulsion, but by your rudeness in doing so.

Darth_Algar's avatar

I have three.

Stinley's avatar

One. A Celtic knot on my shoulder

Coloma's avatar

I got my first tattoo on a party night in San Diego waay back in 1980 when I was 21 years old. The cat tat on my hip. I proceeded the tattoo craze, especially for women, by about, oh, 40 years. haha
My second was at age 42.

tinyfaery's avatar

Yep. Love them. I still want more. I’ll probably get them until I die.

canidmajor's avatar

Gotcha beat, @Coloma! Got my first in 1977 at a ratty little waterfront ink shop in Seattle. Waited in line behind a couple of tow-boat deck hands, until they graciously waved me to the front in a mannerly “ladies first!” kinda way. :-D

Ten years later that venue was a trendy little fabric shop, a result of urban revitalization!

Me, too, @tinyfaery, I love ‘em!

imrainmaker's avatar

@Stinley – something like This or more complex?

gondwanalon's avatar

No. Why put a bumper sticker on a Ferrari?

Coloma's avatar

I love my morning glory anklet. It looks really pretty, sexy, feminine with strappy sandals and a pretty bohemian skirt. I’ve gotten tons of compliments on it. No regrets here.

imrainmaker's avatar

^^ Here’s a link if you’re looking for more of These

Coloma's avatar

^ Oooh..I love pic # 5. Still looking. I have a friend that wants an ankle tat, I’ll share this with her, thanks @imrainmaker

imrainmaker's avatar

^^Yup it is. There’s morning glory also and a cat…)

LuckyGuy's avatar

@Call_Me_Jay You can wear that tat with pride!

LeavesNoTrace's avatar

Yes, and even though many people tell me it’s beautiful, I’m not as crazy about it as I used to be although it’s a leftover from a sentimental, carefree time in my life.

It’s a black lace fan between my shoulder blades and the artist did a fantastic job. However, I prefer my body to look timeless and I don’t want to show it on my wedding day.

syz's avatar

I love seeing artistic ink.

flutherother's avatar

I’m going to have my fluther avatar tattooed on my forehead.

Sneki2's avatar

@flutherother A true Jelly lol

MrGrimm888's avatar

^It’ll be tough to get a job, with a forehead tat…

Darth_Algar's avatar

@MrGrimm888

Do you doubt this fine specimen is anything but employable?

Coloma's avatar

^ LOl Bet he’s in prison. Make that tat really count. haha

YARNLADY's avatar

No, I don’t have any and I don’t like the look of them on other people.

PhiNotPi's avatar

No, I don’t have any tattoos, and I don’t ever plan on having any. From a fashion standpoint I find them unattractive (basically the same as with most cosmetic body modifications, even ear piercings if I think too hard about them).

One of the most common reasons to get a tattoo is to commemorate something of personal significance. In my opinion that still feels like a purely cosmetic thing: an important life event is still an important life event regardless of whether or not I get a tattoo of it. And so personally I don’t feel like I would get anything of value from having a tattoo.

Stinley's avatar

@imrainmaker a little bit like this:

MrGrimm888's avatar

LOL!!! Priceless @Darth_Algar

Somehow I doubt he got that in a legal shop…

imrainmaker's avatar

@Stinley – Yeah saw that one too while searching.

Broadway Musical Alert!

[Merman:] I’m an old salt
[Gaynor:] And I’m a young salt
[Both:] In the Navy we’ve been working very hard
I was part of the Flotilla with Dewey in Manila
An’ I’m a new recruit at the Brooklyn Navy yard
Tonight we’re on a spree and feeling flow’ree
We’ve got a date with gals and drink and food
Across the Brooklyn Bridge and to the Bow’ry
And I’m gonna get the kid tattooed
Tattooed?
Tattooed!
A sailor ain’t a sailor ‘til a sailor’s been tattooed!

Here’s an anchor from a tanker
That I sailed upon when first I went to sea
Here’s another of my mother
Takes me back to when I sat upon her knee
Here’s a crimson heart with a Cupid’s dart
Here’s a Battle Cruiser and when I sit down
On that, too
There’s a tattoo
Of my home town

To the Bow’ry!
To the Bow’ry!
‘Cross the Brooklyn Bridge and I’m just in the mood.
I’ll be filled with diff’rent mixtures
And covered up with pictures
I can’t wait to be—‘twill be great to be
Tattooed.

Tattooed?
Tattooed!
Because a sailor ain’t a sailor ‘till a sailor’s been tattooed!

I don’t have any tattoos! But personally, I don’t mind people having tats. I prefer those who have small tats (not sleeves).
