Where in the U.S. can I go to see fireflies?

Asked by 2davidc8 (10189points) July 28th, 2017

Growing up in Costa Rica, I remember catching fireflies in my hand as a child, and the wonder at seeing them on a summer night.

My wife has never seen a firefly. I would like to know if there is a place in the U.S. where there are fireflies. I don’t think we have them in the S. F. Bay Area, but then again, I haven’t gone out into the woods at night to search for them. In Costa Rica, we had them in our backyards.

Anywhere south of the Mason Dixon in the summer.

New York City has fireflies in Battery Park and Prospect Park and even into the neighborhoods this summer. I haven’t been in Central Park after dark this year but probably there, too.

We actually have synchronized fireflies here in Tennessee. Pretty cool to see if you ever get the chance.

I have them every night around my home here in Western NY. This is the season for them. They do not survive the cold.

My yard in coastal CT.

We had a bunch in TN and NC. I used to see them as a girl in NY.

@Espiritus_Corvus We don’t have them in FL. Maybe way north near the Georgia and Alabama line, but not anywhere I’ve ever lived in FL.

My back yard, just after the sun goes down. Every night in summer.

Central New Jersey. Not as many as there used to be but still see them.

My backyard in southern West Virginia.

I saw them in Austin, TX last year, fall I think. First time in years. A lovely, nostalgia-producing sight. When I was a boy growing up in Fort Worth they were common.

Video of synchronized fireflies
Does not even do justice to actually being there.

I am in the SF Bay Area too. They don’t live in the West because when it is warm here, it isn’t humid. Fireflies like warm humid conditions.

I went with my kids on a school trip to Williamsburg VA. All those California kids were absolutely enthralled by the fireflies at sunset. It is the one thing they all still talk about 8 years later.

I have seen them during the summer in Chicago.
Last night I saw a movie based in Ohio, and they had them. My wife, who is from Michigan, says they are there as well.

Sometimes we get fireflies in the house. I feel so sorry for them, flying around the living room, flashing, flashing to attract a mate. There are no mates in my house.
I catch them and put them outside so they have a better chance of of getting laid.

Do the fireflies tend to go where there’s water?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, not necessarily. We don’t live near water. But when they come out it’s always pretty humid.
I think they’re thicker near water, though.

I’ve seen more fireflies in Pennsylvania than anywhere else, although I suspect most of the east coast has them.
