I just faced this situation and wasn’t able to. I suspect it will depend on what your teller says but I imagine they will have had to endorse it.
You can try it and see what happens.
Deposit it into your account? A check written to someone else? Or, a check written to someone else and you are going to deposit it into their account? I need the specifics.
I would try. Whatever the situation is. I think if you deposit only and don’t take cash back they might let you. You could sign their name, which is illegal, but if you know their signature and their ok with it it’s an option.
Yes, you can, if you are depositing it into their account.
I paid rent on my ex’s apartment by depositing it into the landlord’s account. Never had a problem. It isn’t questioned if you are putting money into someone else’s account; you just can’t get any cash as part of the transaction.
I just reread the details. If you are depositing a check written to them in their account it shouldn’t be any problem.
Yes. The teller can stamp it with an absentee endorsement stamp.
The check is written to my partner but he’s currently out of town and can’t sign.
From what I’ve read, I can do this but can’t get any cash back, only deposit.
However, if you are joint in the account and there is money sitting in it already you can withdraw money aside from the money you are depositing, so it’s not like the account is frozen, just the money you are depositing will have a hold on it for a few days. That’s true almost all checks though.
I misread the question and thought you were talking about cashing it. Agree with the others above.
My bank tellers won’t allow it, so I just put them in the ATM and haven’t had any problems.
^^That drives me crazy. The tellers can be ridiculous.
Lawsuits @JLeslie. It’s not that they want to be ridiculous. They have to be.
@Dutchess_III Either it’s against the law, or it isn’t. Or, against that bank’s policy or it isn’t. Some banks have ridiculous policies.
If you can’t submit a check without a signature on the back then you can’t, but obviously you can if they take the check through the ATM. Why would it be different at the ATM than at the counter? My business checks have a stamp on the back not a signature. We used to hand write for deposit only. You could do the deposit for my business, and you aren’t listed on the account, and I don’t sign the checks.
Right. Some banks have ridiculous policies. Not the tellers fault.
^^Ah, I see what you are saying. I agree sometimes it’s the bank, not the teller. But, sometimes it is the teller if you just go above their heads.
Hi all. I was able to deposit into our account without his signature. Thanks everyone!
