Will Thursday's testimony end the Russian interference investigation?

Asked by seawulf575 (17062points) July 31st, 2017

On Thursday, testimony was given that pointed to the dossier that has been the cornerstone of the Trump/Russia collusion accusations was actually created by the Russians and was created on behalf of a group (Fusion GPS) that has strong ties to the Democrats and particularly to Hillary Clinton. As of today, trying to find stories about the Russian collusion investigation on CNN, ABC, and MSNBC is very difficult. Will this testimony mean that the whole thing will be dropped so further investigations that might lead towards the Democrats won’t happen?

Where did you get that story? Sources? Or are you spreading more innuendos that are hollow?

I haven’t heard anything about this yet. Stay tuned. ( But as purely a preliminary shot in the dark guess, I’d say no. One person’s/source’s testimony doesn’t a firm final conclusion make.)

No, the dossier is not “the cornerstone” of the accusations. False premise.

Meetings between Trump campaign and family members, the attempts to hide them, and what they may have offered are the cornerstone.

Presumably, this question is about Bill Browder’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee (the full text of which can be found here). More specifically, it seems to be about Senator Chuck Grassley’s rather tortured reworking of that testimony (or perhaps Kellyanne Conway’s version of Grassley’s reworking).

What Browder said has been spun on all sides. The White House is claiming it vindicates them, while Democrats have been claiming that all of Trump and Scaramucci’s bizarre behavior last Thursday was a distraction meant to divert attention from Browder’s testimony because it is extremely damaging to the current administration.

So, a few quick points:

(1) The dossier has never been the cornerstone of the Trump/Russia case.

(2) Regardless, it’s an obstruction of justice investigation now. People can be guilty of obstruction of justice even if they haven’t committed any other crime.

(3) Browder did not testify that the dossier was created by Russia. What he testified to is the fact that Fusion GPS—a strategic intelligence firm that has done opposition research for both Democrats and Republicans in the past—has also worked for Russia.

(4) Fusion GPS does not have especially close ties to Hillary Clinton. The most one can say is that some of Clinton’s supporters were the most recent public client of the firm. The second most recent public client? Trump’s Republican primary challengers. Fusion GPS is a mercenary firm. They work for everyone, and they don’t have close ties with anyone.

Would that it were so simple. My bet is that the focus is leaning more on Russian involvement in Trump’s business interests, and particularly the hundreds of millions of purloined rubles laundered through Trump properties.

I hope not. I love watching Trump unravel. When/if Trump goes down, it’s probably going to be over money. As long as they keep digging, they’ll find something. Uncle Sam is a gangster. He doesn’t like money moving around, unless he’s getting his cut. I hope Don was very careful….

We can argue about the definition of collusion. There is no doubt it was attempted by the Trump campaign. Don Jr. posted the e-mails to prove it happened. From what we know they didn’t get what they wanted but they still wanted it. So lets call it attempted collusion. Just because you failed your intent was the same. Attempted murder is a actual crime even if you suck at the actual murdering part.
