Can anyone tell me what the problem could be, with the DVD/CD player on my lap top?

Asked by NomoreY_A (5546points) August 8th, 2017

Admittedly it’s an old laptop, maybe 10 years old. But I cant afford a new one now and it serves all my needs. The DVD player worked fine for years, then a few weeks ago, I tried to put in a movie for my youngest grand daughter, and it wouldn’t play. Nor would any others. Any ideas? Aside from buying a new PC. (Not a big deal I have a regular DVD player, Just annoying.)

Take it to a PC repair shop (I assume you don’t want to do a replacement yourself) should cost you maybe $150 or less. Check the price first.

Have you tried gently blowing it out with canned air? Are the air around the pc all dusty? You can also gently use a vacuum cleaner to clean it.
You might get lucky.

If it is toast check with your neighborhood electronics recycling company. They often stock parts for old computers and laptops. A big one in the Western NY area is Sunnking. They are life savers for legacy equipment.

Snag a USB external DVD drive. They can be had for around 20 bucks.

I like @johnpowell ‘s suggestion. It is a cheap, easy, and quick fix.

I’d still try a shot of compressed air though.

It’s about $20 for an internal DVD drive. All you need is a screwdriver to replace it.

Or you could take it to a repair shop that will make over $100 for about 5 minutes work.

@Kropotkin :: The difficulty here is laptop. So it isn’t just a normal 5.25” drive bay. It could be a tray loading one. Those can get very expensive if you have a random laptop where your only source of parts is eBay.

@johnpowell I checked ebay. They’re really cheap. Some are under $4. Most are under $10.

The only issue I see is finding out whether it’s an IDE or a SATA connection. The laptop is at the age where it might be either.
