What is the most overused word?

Asked by LostInParadise (32215points) August 9th, 2017

My vote goes to “system”. Everything is a system. There are voting systems, health care systems, teaching systems, betting systems and sprinkling systems. You just can’t beat the system.

“Like.” Used as, like, unnecessary fillers in sentences.

Tar sands, and Obamacare.

Right now it seems to be “unprecedented,” although you could make a strong case for “double down.”

For CNN it is the Breaking News alert. Crying “Wolf” too many times for bs news.

“Literally” and “ironic”.

“This”.
Used as a kind of confirmation or sign of agreement with something someone else has stated on social media.

@Dutchess_III That was the word that popped in my mind also! Some overused: problematic, bottom line, comprehensive overhaul. Remember when the word “said” was swapped with the word goes? I second the Breaking News Alert! So overused.

“Amazing” People say things are amazing when they aren’t. I used to have a friend, an ex friend now, who used to date all these jerks and each one of them was “amazing” when she first met them. There was nothing special about them when she met them, and all the things that they did or said were fairly normal every day things, but pretty much every one of them either cheated on her, or didn’t like her as much as she liked them and they dumped her. It was “amazing” how bad her taste in men was.

“Crappy”. I hear this word used a lot from other students at my college and it’s baffling as to why people use such a tame and undescriptive word to describe something unpleasant.

gondwanalon's avatar

Back in the ‘80’s I knew a guy that said “amazing” so much that I started calling him amazing.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@rockfan because they don’t want to say “shitty.” Nothing wrong with that.
