Can you go into more depth for this quote?

“Everyone is a genius
But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree
It will live it’s whole life believing it is stupid.”
I feel stupid from time to time. It is nasty and pervasive. Can you help me not to feel stupid?

Malcolm Gladwell popularized the 10,000 hour rule, which says that, regardless of how much talent you have, you need to put in 10,000 hours before you can be an expert at anything. That does not mean anyone can be an expert at anything, but it does suggest that putting in the time will increase one’s proficiency. Is there anything that you are sufficiently passionate about to put in the necessary time? Time devoted to fantasizing does not count.
The quote comes from a self help book by Matthew Kelly in which he claims (falsely) that Einstein said it. If you can invent three things Einstein didn’t say you will be three times less stupid than Matthew Kelly.
While I can certainly climb a tree better than any fish, they can all easily kick my ass in the swimming department.
As Will Rogers once said:
“We’re all ignorant…..just about different things….”
@RedDeerGuy1 “I feel stupid from time to time. It is nasty and pervasive. Can you help me not to feel stupid?”
Check out this short video, from The School of Life.
“We can accommodate our idiocy more sweetly inside ourselves when we trust, at last, that it is an intrinsic feature of being human; that it is a factor to be understood and forgiven in ourselves because it must be understood and forgiven in everyone.”
And maybe this one too, about geniuses, from the same YouTube channel.
@Sneki2 D’oh! Blame the original writer I just cut and pasted the quote.
I can’t say enough good things about the links that @rebbel posted. Those are good. Maybe elementary and simplistic, but so what? They’re apt and helpful, and that matters.
Regardless of the source of the quotation it is an ingenious statement, and also apt.
Here’s another:
Dance like no one is watching,
Love like you’ll never be hurt,
Sing like no one is listening,
Live like it’s heaven on earth.
—William Purkey on life
After reading @CWOTUS’ quote, i would like to add; watch, “Zorba, the Greek”.
“Zorba lives with his guts and his nose. Basil “Boss” filters his life through his intellectualism, afraid to let his soul dance. The influence of the two upon each other illustrates so much about the human condition in ways both inspiring and sometimes unbearable.”
It seems to me that Malcolm Gladwell is talking about experts rather than genius. Genius is more innate and discovered, as opposed to studied, learned or mastered. I like Michael Meade on genius (and on many other things).
A fish may not be able to be taught to climb a tree unless it’s under water.
You could teach most able-bodied humans to climb a tree, and they could master it if they kept at it for thousands of hours. But some small children are natural climbers – it comes to them naturally and they delight in it. Others take to music. Others to words. Others to painting. Others to invention. Others to building with sand. Others to intuitive understanding of others. Others to prime numbers. Others to philosophy. Or rather, each to their own specific genius, though sadly, most of us to something we forget or never even find, because our parenting, education and culture tend to overlook, suppress, or otherwise fail to notice or appreciate it.
Everyone is a genius, with their own flavors of it; perhaps at more than one thing.
What’s yours?
You ain’t stupid, you maybe just lack self confidence. Or just take my approach to life, and adopt a who gives a shit attitude. I know I’m not the sharpest tool in the drawer, but I don’t care. What you see is what you get, take it or leave it. I never cared what people call me, just call me when dinner is ready. If people have to put down other people to make their own sorry ass feel better, break a leg, right? That attitude and a nickel won’t buy them a fucking candy bar. Cheer up pal!
Yes. You can too or you aren’t old enough to be here.
