Do any of you have any friends or relatives, or Facebook pals who often complain about their painful ailments (in this case, I’m referring to an acquaintence who suffers from obesity and arthritis) who receive advice from their doctors, but then refuse to follow the advice, and continue to suffer and complain?

Yes. My husband was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis. Spent a week in a hospital. He takes his cumiden regularly, but doesn’t go in for periodic check ups.
Sometimes his ankle or leg starts to swell and he used to go, “Look at this!” The first couple of times I said, “You have to go to the doctor! That could be serious!”
And then he’d whine about why he didn’t want to go to the doctor.
It got to the point where I wouldn’t even look and I just said “Go to the doctor.” After he realized he wasn’t going to get any sympathy from me he quit talking about it. And hasn’t gone to the doctor.
^^ My husband too! He’s not quite as bad, but pretty close.
Oh, yes. I had many patients like that. About half were hypochondriacs and the other half were often sick, but enjoyed the attention they would get from friends and family—and their nurse, who must take everything seriously until diagnostics prove otherwise. If the problem was real and the patient ignored medical advice, and did nothing toward getting better, so be it. Nurses and doctors are not enforcers of medicine, they are advisors.
My dad has chronic back pain and his doctor told him that he shouldn’t lift anything over 10 pounds for a few weeks. A few days later he went to an antique store looking for a bookcase and threw his back out again after trying to haul it into his truck.
