Was the German Left too passive in its opposition toward the Nazi Party from 1920 to 1933?

The National Socialist party was the end product of many nationalistic and socialistic movements in Germany that started as World War I ended.
All were formed around the notion of trying to thwart Communism, and help the German people recover on all levels, economic and psychological, from the defeat in WWI
But it got down to – is recovery from economic depression and impossible reparations demanded by the treaty of Versailles an issue that the Bolshevik communists can solve, or the German people can solve.
Most Germans, being nationalistic almost by nature, would not tolerate leftist Marxist notions.
So they picked the other choice…
The left probably never had a chance.

According to most survivors of that era, yes. They seem to unanimously opine that more should have been done…
