How much caffeine do you need to drink to develop a tolerance to caffeine?

Asked by Sunshinegirl11 (1110points) August 24th, 2017 from iPhone

Out of curiousity. Do you guys have any research articles or anything that states how much caffeine per day or per week that would make you develop a tolerance?

Asking because I love caffeine. I love the energy it gives me, the motivation it gives me, and it puts me in a better mood. I limit myself to one cup per day, and even then I don’t drink every day. Probably have 3 or 4 cups a week at most.

I’ve talked to people and they tell me how caffeine doesn’t work for them anymore. I hope I never ever get like that! Caffeine is life.

I drink about 4 cups every morning, have for years, it works for me still, just fine. Can’t start the day without it. haha

One cup a day sporadically probably isn’t doing much to get you addicted, so you feel the little boost when you do drink it. If you drank it every day you would be more likely to get addicted, and then drinking your cup of coffee would be more likely a way for you to not feel like crap (because you are going into withdrawal) rather than a boost of energy. Addicts need their drug to feel “normal.”

Everyone is different though.

The articles you are hunting for are out there. Just google “Caffeine addiction”. As for me, I drink an average of three cups of very strong Cuban coffee twice a day: Three in the morning during and after breakfast—sometimes four—and two or three in the afternoon with a pastry. With little variation, this has been my routine since 1982.

If I require more than four cups of coffee to get up to speed in the morning, I back off for a few days and drink tea or have no stimulant at all. After two or three days of abstinence, I can get along with one or two cups in the morning and one in the afternoon. I do this every few weeks, or the coffee will stop having the desired effect.

I’m a good 4–6 cups of strong coffee daily. It still “works” but you just notice it less. I have no intention of cutting back.

One cup of coffee will keep me awake until 3 am. More effective than League of Legends.

I drink about 2 shots of expresso with a cup of milk.. cafe con leche I guess? I mainly drink it to keep the migraines away, I’ve been drinking expresso since I was 7 because it’s normal where my family is from and at this point it does absolutely nothing for me.

I drank one or two coffees a day plus 4+ teas which also contains caffeine (but less than coffee). I found I needed it to feel normal. I decided to give up and went cold turkey. It was awful. I had a headache for two weeks. I should have cut back more gradually I read afterwards!

Now I feel fine. I have the occasional coffee and tea – less than 1 a week of either. I don’t miss it as I drink decaff tea and coffee instead. I still like the taste of coffee

As you can see from the above statements, it isn’t that people develop a tolerance for caffeine, as much as people need a level to feel normal. It is similar to the effect nicotine has on people.

People on nicotine need a dose to feel normal. Coffee drinkers are the same way; they need a maintenance level or else they suffer from withdrawal.

I drink about forty to fifty ounces of coffee a day. I don’t drink coffee after about noon, otherwise it will keep me awake at night.
