What are some industries that might be better for all of us if they did or made something else?

Asked by Kardamom (33525points) August 24th, 2017

I’ve always wondered if it was possible for clothes and paper and other products to be made from tobacco, instead of just cigarettes. They make clothes and paper and all sorts of things out of hemp, why not tobacco? If the tobacco growers could change their end product, it seems like it would be a win-win situation for all of us, or rather it would be if they also stopped making cigarettes and those types of products.

What are some other industries that could change their end products to make life better for all of us.

Do you know of any companies that already did this? Maybe some companies from 50 or a hundred years ago that already made the transition?

Tobacco growers already do more (and better) than just growing for the cigarette market. Nicotine-based insecticides are among the safest and most effective that are in current use.

In North Carolina there is a group of farmers that have started growing Hemp again. They sell to companies to make rope, hemp oil and clothing.

We could no longer make swords, but make plowshares instead

(Isaiah 2:4) He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.

@elbanditoroso, how did you know that beautiful sentiment was the theme of my confirmation speech when I was 13?

Full disclosure: My dad wrote it for me.

@Pachy – I was there in the back of the sanctuary, listening to every word.

LOL, @elbanditoroso. Then you must surely have noticed I forgot to say a whole paragraph!

Sixty years later I still regret that.

Banks could put their vast stolen profits to use in fighting poverty.
