Are you familiar with a restaurant called Sugar Factory?

Asked by Love_my_doggie (13084points) August 27th, 2017

Yesterday, Paul and I passed one during our trips to/from a Nationals game.

Normally, I pay no attention to chain and franchise restaurants, but there was something unusual about this place that intrigued me. Each time we walked past, the restaurant was filled to capacity – both inside and at the sidewalk tables – but only with African American customers.

Our region is very diverse and integrated. It’s startling to look inside any restaurant and not see a mix of people from various ethnic backgrounds.

I’m curious why this place, Sugar Factory, is such a strong draw for one ethnic subculture yet, it would seem, nobody else.

Never heard of it but just looked up a menu. Looks like the usual fare, not soul food or particularly Southern. There is one in NYC too. It’s a puzzlement.

Apparently it is a company inspired by pop culture, and has gobs of celebrity endorsements. It seems to be candy first, followed by just a few restaurants.
They sell thirty dollar lollipops and designer sweets of all sorts.
That’s all I found.

I went to their store in Foxwoods. Cute stuff, very colorful and nicely displayed but very expensive. I predict it’s a trend that’s not going to last.

I see they’re in NYC – Meatpacking District. Probably tourists love it there. Regular New Yorkers have their own favorite spots that are not necessiarily inspired by trend.

They’re also in Orlando and Las Vegas. As I guessed, all for tourists.
