Why do some people find public displays of body functions funny, and others find it very distasteful?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47071points) August 28th, 2017

My DIL recently did an assignment for her sociology class that required her to do something in public that would be considered rude, or weird, and make note of people’s reactions. She chose to burp very loudly at a crowded IHOP. it made her uncomfortable, but she did it.
Most reacted with disgust but some laughed, and one guy even said, “Man, I wish my girlfriend could burp like that!”
Reactions like ^^^ that just leave me shaking my head in disbelief. I don’t understand it.
We have an female acquaintance who is almost 40, who makes it a point of burping REALLY loudly at least once during visits. Then she giggles. No, she doesn’t have a medical issue. She does it on purpose. She thinks it’s funny.

Why would she, or anyone, think this was funny?

I think it’s immature to find that funny. I think it’s crude. That’s just my opinion.

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

I never understood it, myself. I also never understood the British obsession with scat jokes and spanking. I just don’t know. Never thought any of that was funny, not even when I was a kid.

I’m on board with you two. Not the least bit funny.

One time, when I was in Jr. High, there was a guy, a bit older than me who rode my bus.

One time he yelled across the bus to his friend ahead and said, “Hey Matt! They were out of toilet paper again!” and he waved his hand around. It had something brown all over it. I assume it was chocolate or dirt. I thought it was so gross. I went home and told my Dad. He said, “You really don’t want to associate with those kind of people. It’s low class.”
And so we learn. (Dad, BTW, was raised during the depression in a tiny town in Texas. His dad was the Sheriff, and they were poor. Not anyone’s idea of high class! But through my parents, BOTH of whom grew up poor, I learned that having some class can be learned.)

Agreed with all the above. I guess you call it, “Couth”. It’s a learned behavior I suppose, handed down by parents and grand parents to their progeny. As an example, some people would call Mr. Trump high class, because he has tons of money. But I wouldn’t call a “pussy grabber” a couth person at all. That’s not a political remark, just a comment.

Blame our prim and proper uptight society.

Fart jokes and their ilk have been around for hundreds of years. America is so uptight and ‘proper’ these days that even the remotest suggestion of something bodily is unacceptable. I see that as more an indictment on the OCD of people than of the tastefulness of bodily functions.

It’s not limited to people “these days,” @elbanditoroso. There have always been good manners and bad.

We were all raised in different background and had different experiences growing up. Personally, I think it’s funny when it happens to other people. Lets face it, it’s funny to see someone fart/burp on other people’s face. I don’t support such things but I won’t betray my sense of humour.

If someone do such thing to me and expect that I find it funny that person would have to be my close friend as I’d consider it rude if done purposely by complete stranger.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Who in their right mind would fart or burp on someone’s face? That’s beyond rude! That’s disgusting!

NomoreY_A's avatar

Ditto @Dutchess_III If a “friend” did that shit to me, they would be un friended real fast, and I ain’t talking no Facebook. Talk about uncouth…

I wonder if the same bacteria that is in vomit and feces is expelled in the gasses we release.

Look at this video. Aren’t you at least a bit amused by that? Even some of the ‘victims’ find it funny. And I just remember that you once tried to prank your son with fake poop so you can’t really say such things as disgusting now.

NomoreY_A's avatar

I never did any such thing, you must have me confused with another jelly.

Unofficial_Member's avatar

^ I was referring to Duchy, @NomoreY_A . We sometimes speak freely without name reference. Akin to tacit understanding.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I never tried to prank my son with fake dog poop.

Dutchess_III's avatar

And why do some people get so upset and disbelieving when others don’t find the same things funny?

NomoreY_A's avatar

@Unofficial_Member Apologies – guess I read that incorrectly.

Unofficial_Member's avatar

Then what about your comment in this thread. I know my memory is still good.

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

My god, that video and thread is packed with imbeciles. Thank god I don’t know anybody like that.

It was a double entendre, @Unofficial_Member. It was related to an incident many years ago when my son actually had to go to court when he and his friends stole some stuff out of a guy’s truck. It was a mindless, 14 year old thing to do. One of the things they took was fake dog poop. Yeah, he had to go to court and there was some confusion on how to “carry the description of the object” in the court papers. That was kind of funny.
I, personally, didn’t think putting it on the basement floor was terribly funny, but I thought maybe the kids would (they’re immature children, after all,) and Chris would appreciate the jab.

That is an isolated incident. I think burping on purpose, and farting as loudly as possible in a group of people is just gross and vulgar.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@Unofficial_Member I guess you’re the go to guy. Exactly what do you find funny about it?

Unofficial_Member's avatar

^ Like I said, Duchy. It’s funny to see people’s reaction. However, it’ll be obviously rude if it’s done to me by a stranger. Now, now, don’t tell me you didn’t even grin throughout the video. The amount of likes and supportive comments are enough proof to say that such thing is funny. Or perhaps… we just have different sense of humour.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I don’t recall a video. I saw two links talking about Shakespeare or something.

I agree that seeing people’s reaction to certain things can be funny. But seeing them react to something gross just doesn’t strike me as funny. I understand some people find it funny, but I don’t know why. So I’m asking you, WHY do you think that kind of thing funny? I really am trying to understand. Like I mentioned in the details, we have a female acquaintance that makes a point of burping really loudly and then giggling. What is there to giggle about? And why would a guy give my DIL a compliment, of all things, for so grossly belching in public?

Dutchess_III's avatar

I found the video. No, I don’t think it’s funny.

Unofficial_Member's avatar

That is called sense of humour, Duchy. There’s no precise formula to understand that. Just like how some people think meat taste gross while others think it’s delicious. If you ask myself personally, I can say that it all began by watching cartoon when I was a kid, how one character put nails on the floor and other characters step on them and yelling in pain (Gosh! That’s so funny, oh memory), or like how they bash each others’ heads using clubs (funny, when it comes to cartoon it’s completely legal to show that). We all have our own cups of tea when it comes to funny things.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I agree with that. But I think we should also take other people’s sensibilities into consideration. If you really can’t help it that’s one thing. But to do it on purpose, somehow believing that everyone will think it’s funny is….I don’t understand that.

Mariah's avatar

I don’t find it funny, I don’t find it particularly gross either, but I do wish there wasn’t such a severe stigma around this stuff. Having Crohn’s disease in a dorm of 20 prim and proper squeamish girls who you share a bathroom with was a fucking nightmare.

Coloma's avatar

I find it crude and not funny and I have a great sense of humor but don’t find public displays of crudeness amusing or toilet humor appealing.

Dutchess_III's avatar

If someone can’t help it it is polite to not acknowledge it or make comment @Mariah. I’m so sorry for what you must have gone through. I heart you. (Because I can’t make a heart thing on Fluther on my phone!)

I guess politeness is the crux of this question.

anniereborn's avatar

I think farts are funny. My husband and I laugh about it all the time. However, when in public I would never let one rip unless I couldn’t help it. If I heard someone else do it in public I’d have to giggle to myself. Does that make me immature? I dunno. But it’s something I can’t help. It’s just darn funny.

elbanditoroso's avatar

This is decidedly not funny. link

Meh, life can get sooo serious. A little laughter at stupid things can help. I’m not choosy nor judgy.
