Can I improve store bought beef jerky and make it into cheap pemmican?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24947points) August 30th, 2017

Pemmican costs a fortune. Can I shred beef jerky with fruit and make a good midnight snack. Instead of ordering a pizza at 11pm.

It’s generally not a great idea to make jerky in an oven, because it keeps the meat at an unsafe temperature for too long. If you have a food dehydrator, it’s totally possible and super delicious.

The problem with trying to use store bought jerky is that the meat has been dried, There isn’t enough tallow to bind the fruit and nuts and jerky into a ball, so you have to add lard or bacon fat.

Pemmican is an energy type bar for survival, not for snacking. As one person who made home made pemmican said, “The verdict? I dig the savory-sweet combo, but I’m done after one bite. Meaning, it was just too heavy and my body wasn’t ready for it, I feel like I need to shovel snow or climb a frozen mountain first.”

In other words, @RedDeerGuy1 it isn’t a snack food, why would you eat it?

@zenvelo I tried some when I was a kid and I liked it. I also tried bannock I liked that to. I’m looking to streamline my diet to feel full and to save money and to save trouble and hassle to feeding myself. I would like the bachelor chow from Futurama . I had a Puritan Beef Stew for snack at 4am today and am getting hungry again. I’m thinking of ordering x-large pizzas and putting them in the fridge for a day or two. That way I never go hungry again. I saved $50 a month by canceling my cable and would like to have that for food and savings.

This article tells the history of pemmican and also tells how to make it. They suggest starting with regular meat rather than jerky. Their preferred way of making it is to use a dehydrator, as @zenvelo suggested, but you can also use an oven at a low setting. The article says that pemmican does not taste very good, which as far as I am concerned does not make it worthwhile apart from emergency rations.

^^^ @LostInParadise That was @Muad_Dib that gets credit for suggesting a dehydrator. :)

For pemmican you are better off starting with raw meat and using a dehydrator. An oven CAN work, but it doesn’t get the air flow that is necessary.
