Need financial advice ASAP?

Asked by CA0180 (36points) September 2nd, 2017

NEED ADVICE -WHAT DO I DO????

This is my financial situation, what should I do? Haven’t found a job yet, haven’t even had an interview. Constructive comments only please.

Note: would like to stay here because my son is really hard to live with due to his ODD (anger/violence/destructiveness)...I can pay what I have right now & use car payment money to pay this month’s rent & probably not get evicted (I said I couldn’t pay til 25th & they got very mad because I was late last month & husband is eviction happy, but I think they will wait til 11th if I give them some now), but that puts my car at risk of getting repo’d and I will face the same financial hurdles again next month.

What I have:
– $244.77 cash on card
– $220.51 unemployment
– $19 cash
– ½ tank of gas

Potential Income:
– Child support, unknown amt or receiving date
– $482 9/11 (need $450 for car payment)
– $482 9/25
– $482 10/9
– $482 10/23
– $85 10/30

What I need:
– $880 rent ASAP
– $45 cell 9/10-ish
– $545 PG&E 9/8 (end of 15day notice, heap??)
– $50 ticket 9/12 (to keep license)
– $400 to get car insurance again
– $40 pinkslip (possibly get $200 for other car)
– toilet paper, cat food, deodorant, toothpaste, dish soap, garbage bags, boxes, packing tape
– $1–200 storage unit

Can you pick up a job driving for Uber or delivering pizzas? Pizza tips can be good in the right neighborhood. And I think Uber pays daily. Maybe someone else can weigh in with more information.

Well, you over $2,200.00 in immediate and important bills ( adding about $75.00 for personal products and pet food mentioned etc.not including any groceries ) and you have less than $500.00 in credit/cash available. What do you mean child support is an unknown amount and unknown receiving date? Does the father of your child have a court order to pay, is he in arrears, have you been getting paid on a regular basis?
You have a lot of pressing and serious immediate need.

Rent, utilities and reinstating your car insure. PG& E may work with you and accept a partial payment but they are going to want to set a near future date for the balance to be paid.
Driving without car insurance is not only illegal but very risky, but I am assuming you already know that.
Honestly you are really in a crappy situation, short of a personal loan from family, something has to give, obviously.

Maybe look for immediate gigs on Craigslist, housekeeping, babysitting, anything to get some fast cash in your pocket. Assisted living and nursing homes are always looking for caregivers, you might be able to find a position in a facility doing some sort of caregiving work. Yes, ask PG&E about an energy bill program like HEAP to pay your utility bill but I am pretty sure that is a one time only thing, like once annually, not an ongoing thing. Call your local womans shelter and ask about a food bank or pantry and you can get a box of free food, maybe cat food too, or call your local animal shelter and ask if they have pet food available for those in need.

Good luck and best wishes, you certainly need it.

@snowberry, She does not have car insurance so Uber or Pizza delivery would not work out, I am sure you have to show proof of insurance to be a driver.

Sounds to me like it’s time to re-locate before all your money runs out. You might check North Dakota for oil industry jobs. They are still in the middle of a boom there, and they have the lowest unemployment in the States.

In my day, during the deep recession of the post vietnam war years, it was the Alaska Pipeline people went to for work. It paid off, many came back with enough tuition for a master’s degree, others opened their own businesses, and some stayed up there to become Alaskans and raise families. The ND oil boom makes the Alaska pipeline look like Standard Oil next to a ma and pa gas station.

Get on Google and ask about the areas in the States where unemployment is the lowest, then investigate the geography and rents in those areas. And look for something to do, get into, while you’re there. Every place has something. Get out of the box, think anew.

You might find that your unemployment check stretches very far in some of these places. Laramie, Wyoming has 2 bedroom homes for rent for $400/mo. Yards big enough to have a dog and even a horse, if you like. Bitter winters, but not anywhere as long as Alaska’s.

But be careful. INvestigate thoroughly. For some reason Laramie has the highest suicide rate in the US. So, there’s that. If you have an inclination to write, there might be a good story in it.

You never know what’s around the next corner when you travel to a new place. A new adventure! For sure. Pad the resume while you’re there, save some munny, and go someplace else if you don’t like it. Just keep on rolling till you find the right place. And with the internet, you don’t even have to leave your couch to eliminate a lot of the risk of relocation.

It’s a big, varied country and you are free to roam it. A lot of people don’t have that combination of luxuries.

Keep us posted, please.

Many places won’t rent to someone who has been evicted. So make sure you aren’t!

Wait….what happened to traveling to Pakistan this month to meet with your online romantic interest? How were you and your son planning to travel to Pakistan if you have no money? Surely you knew you would have no money last month when you asked this question and you said you were traveling to meet him in Sept.

Can you find a waitress job nearby? You would get tips and possibly make more than minimum wages in the long run.

@coloma he was going to pay for it but we’re waiting until December now, my son, best friend & her boyfriend are going and we’re going to celebrate their 5yr anniversary.

I’m debating going back to PA (I’m in CA) where we lived for a short while (where best friend lives). They started a company abt a yr ago, can sustain themselves but are not in a position to offer a relocation package yet. They are starting other side businesses as well & want me to help out but it’s difficult trying to figure out how to get there & I’d still have to find a place to live & a couple jobs for money til business picks up for them.

Can’t take a loan from anyone,I’ll know on Tues if the landlord gives us 3 day notice, which would mean they’re starting the eviction process.

I’ve been looking for work all over but I live in a small poverty stricken area, everything is at least an hour away.

I’m sure I could find work in PA, it’s just a matter if getting there.

& FYI fiancee & I decided back in july that we wanted to move back to PA anyway. Thanks for trying to throw that in my face, judgemental d!ck.

Getting to PA seems to be your best bet. I hope you figure out a way to get there. Good luck!

Might want to look at eviction laws in your state. In most states, the eviction process isn’t as easy as the landlord tossing you out when he decides. In some areas it can take up to 6 months to evict someone. That doesn’t mean you don’t have to pay or that the landlord can’t take you to court later on, but it might ease an immediate worry. In the meanwhile, can you get public housing? Food Stamps? TANF? I would go down to the social services office and ask what you are eligible for. Yours is the exact situation that these things are for. Not sure how old your son is, but if he is old enough to understand, you might want to include him in on some of these discussions/decisions. It might remove some of the anger if he is included and doesn’t feel helpless.
