Why don't baseball games start on the hour or half hour?
I was looking at today’s baseball schedule. None of the games start at :00 or :30—they were all set for 1:05 or 2:10 or 6:40 or 7:05 or something similar.
Why?

Maybe the first five or ten minutes is allotted to the National Anthem and introducing the players?
That’s the time of first pitch. Gives time for the preliminaries to get out of the way.
@Muad_Dib has it right.
That 5 minutes gives television time to talk up the game, announce the pitchers, and generally blather.
But the time was also five after in non televised/radio games like Coastal Plain league baseball.
The home team sets the time for the line-ups to be handed to the umpires which is on the hour usually.
The TV and radio announcers need 5–10 minutes to introduce and briefly discuss expectations about the upcoming game. Broadcast time begins exactly on the hour or half-hour, so the play-by-play team gets a brief period of time for introductions. If you think about it, it would be a bit jolting to time the start of airtime exactly with the first pitch.
@Tropical_Willie All Major League baseball games have been on the radio since the 1940’s.
Ball games start at five after for the same reason kick-off for the Super Bowl is always at 6:17 ET. Media control the sports time.
My local Coastal Plain League (College students) team has a 7:05 start for all their evening games it is not broadcasted to anyone or anywhere. @zenvelo ^^^^^^^^^^
@jca Thanx :>)
