Could my friend face a legal problem?

Asked by NomoreY_A (5546points) September 6th, 2017

A friend of mine at work, was keeping the ashes of a deceased woman, the mother of a lady friend of his, who had gone through a homeless phase. Now she is back on her feet, and wants the ashes back, but he has lost them. As they say, no good deed goes unpunished. Can the guy face legal repercussions when she finds out? He’s hoping he can locate them, but no luck so far.

He can find an urn that looks the same and fill it with random ash.

He’s hoping to locate who/what?
The urn and the ashes?
It’s either lying about it, which is never a good idea, I feel, or telling the truth, however hard that may be.
If I were the daughter of the deceased woman I would like to be told the truth.
About legal issues?
That depends on the ‘deal’ the two had (did they write things down?), or maybe on the law of where they are residing?
In the Netherlands you can do whatever you want with the ashes.

I don’t think ashes are the same thing as a body. There are laws regarding the disposal of a body.

I seriously doubt it, unless there was some sort of legal contract specifying you were to be the guardian of the urn. If she just handed the cremains to him in a coffee can and asked hm to store them for awhile and he accidentally misplaced them, well…ashes to ashes. haha

It is a disappointing situation, but not a legal one.
I hope he finds the missing urn soon.

^^Yep x 3. No written contract, no compensation… just a guy doing someone a favor that didn’t work out.

How do you lose an urn full of ashes?

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

^^I dunno. LOL. Maybe the same way you lose the suitcase with the nuclear codes?

@Kardamom Well they were locked inside his small safe, but when he went to look for them they weren’t there. Go figure. @rebbel The urn and the ashes.
