If you joined Fluther in the past few years, would you mind sharing how you found the site?
I only ask because several years ago, Google changed an algorithm it used to filter out content farms from search results, and whatever the algorithm became, it filtered this site out as well. Original discussion here. As far as I know, this hasn’t changed, which means our site won’t show up on Google searches. (Does anyone know differently? If so, please read this question as: “How did we escape the oppressive thumb of the content farm algorithm?” ;)
But we have had many users join the site since the content farm issue. (Yay!) I’m just curious: how did you find the site?
I joined precisely because I happened upon the site when I was searching something (though I can’t remember what I was searching anymore). It was the first Q&A site I’d ever really heard of.
Did you find it on a random web search? (If so, was it through Google or another search engine?) Did you hear about it through word of mouth? (If so, where? Another site? A friend?) Were you specifically looking for site like this? (If so, how did you go about finding it?) Or anything else I haven’t thought of.
Would you mind sharing your Fluther origin story?
(Feel free to share your origin story even if you’re pre-content-farm-algorithm-debacle! I’m just especially curious about how people found the site after that point.)

Maybe I misunderstand, but I can get Fluther hits on Google. I tried Googling a couple of unique Fluther usernames together and got Fluther hits.
I joined Fluther like a decade ago. I was looking for an online hangout, and trying the craigslist forums, and ran into Gailcalled there, and was noting how spotty the forum there was, and she recommded Fluther to me, and the rest is history. ;-)
I was at school trying to access Quora. It was blocked and I was bored as hell so I googled alternative Q&A sites. I tried a few, most were blocked. This one stood out to me because of the name. I made an account, answered this question (Not realizing at the time that the question was a few months old) and have been visiting almost every day since (There was a large gap I took over the summer, but other than that, I’ve been here every day I was able)
I have been here since Jan 3rd, 2017. :)
I’m a new account for a former member, who came over in the Answerbag rush of December 2008.
I came in 2008. My dog had just died a few weeks prior and I was thinking of getting another dog, so I was looking up names for dogs. I was directed here. And have never left.
I came over with dutchess, realeyes, ragingloli, and others in the Great Wis.dm Migration.

I was looking for a Y!A alternative. Searched “best Y!A sites” and came across a site I don’t remember, maybe Answerbag or something with the same question. Someone mentioned Fluther. The rest is history.
I want to ask a question about how spammers and trolls find this site everyday too :P
I fell in through Google. I think I Googled something about “what do spiders think about? ” It brought me to the first thread I took part in. An older thread, but jellies seemed happy to cracking it back open…
Hope that helps…
I arrived in 2010. I was frequenting a cooking site, of which I cannot now recall, but one day a box appeared at the top of the cooking site that asked if we would like to answer some Q’s about cooking.
I thought it was for the cooking site itself, but then I was directed to Fluther and decided to sign up, not realizing that it was a much broader Q & A type of site. I was not familiar with any of the other Q & A sites.
At first I answered only food related questions, but then I started answering other questions and the community, at that time (there are still a few of those folks around, and I think they know who they are) were very kind and encouraging to me, and seemed to appreciate my contributions.
I grew to love this site, and appreciate our community, and I feel so glad that serendipity, and a love of nachos and cooking, brought me here on cardamom dusted wings : )
I read about it in a news site column as “an interesting and intelligent community.” Can’t remember what the site was that referenced it.
Thanks all for sharing!
@MrGrimm888 that does help, I guess that means we’re no longer blocked from search results! (Or else I misunderstood what the content farm mis-designation meant). Which is good. I was under the impression that couldn’t happen anymore.
@Zaku oh, haha I guess that would have been an easier way to test! .... I can’t remember if I could still do searches like that when I knew we were blocked from search results. I guess I don’t really know how the whole thing works…!
@SergeantQueen, just curious: When you Googled for Q&A sites, did you find those sites on Google, or did you find a list mentioning them?
@Mimushu1995, I wonder about the spammers, and trolls, too!
Again, thanks all. I guess I just missed when the content farm algorithm thing no longer became an issue? But I’m glad it’s not! Especially because jellies like @SergeantQueen and @MrGrimm888 were able to find this place!
@zenvelo, how interesting! I hadn’t ever heard that way before.
@Kardamom, I’m happy for the serendipity, too!
@Muad_dib and @Rarebear, oh yeah, the migrations! Those both happened a little before i found this place.
@chyna aw, is that how you picked a name?
@soubresaut No I got a rescue dog and kept the name she had, Molly.
I’m a mod/admin at another site. I was looking at a piece of spam and wondered where else it might show up. I googled a distinctive sentence in the spam which brought me here. After I whacked the spam at home, I came back here to read more – and continue to come back to read, post and relax. It’s a nice mellow place (most of the time).
Interestingly (?), the two sites often get the same entertaining spam.
So, @BellaB where is the best microwave repair shop in Hyderabad?
@zenvelo I cannot tell a lie – I own it!
I just sniffed the internet air for prey to feast on & followed my nose…never lets me down.
I did a search in Google for “sites like Quora”. That is how I found your site.
