Why are my ankles and feet swollen?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47127points) October 1st, 2017

I haven’t worn shoes at all today, just socks.
My liquid intake isn’t excessive. I haven’t even had a Coke today.
Also, I take blood pressure meds and one of them is a diuretic.

What can cause this?

How has your salt intake been today? Been eating chips or popcorn?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@zenvelo I thought that too. My ankles get swollen when I lounge around or stand too much .

Have you eaten Chinese lately?

Dutchess_III's avatar

I had pancakes and one sausage today.

No, haven’t eaten Chinese in several weeks.

AND I AM NOT PREGNANT! I sent Rarebear a picture and he said I was pregnant.

stanleybmanly's avatar

have they swollen in the past?

Mariah's avatar

Both ankles? Swelling there can be a sign of a blood clot but it’d only be the leg the clot was in.

Dutchess_III's avatar

No they haven’t been swollen in the past.

And yes, it’s both feet. I have a picture if it would help. Well, of one foot, but they’re both about the same.

Dutchess_III's avatar

If they’re still swollen tomorrow I’ll go to the doc.

si3tech's avatar

@Dutchess_III I think of sodium intake. Blood pressure problems. And I agree that if your feet are swollen tomorrow see your doc. For me, riding in the car too long without a break or on a plane for a few hours.

So many possibilities.

Liver problems
Kidney problems
Heart problems
Standing a very long time
High salt intake

My MIL has it happen when she flies. It’s weird. She stays swollen in her lower extremities for days, and then it finally goes away. She’s had it for 20 years.

Do you have any other symptoms?

jca's avatar

My first thought was heart problems.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, guys, today my left foot is actually hurting so they were able to get me in at 3:15. I’ll let you know.

Rick has blood clots. His whole family has heart issues. I don’t have a history of it in my family though, but it’s still scary.

Keep us posted please.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Got back from the docs. She said she didn’t see any indication of clots and all my vitals were good. She said it should go down by itself in a couple of days.
I’ll keep my feet elevated when I can

Thanks y’all.

Good news, thank you for posting. Hang in there.

JLeslie's avatar

I was just thinking. My mom swells up when she’s out in the heat too long.

si3tech's avatar

@Dutchess_III Thanks for the update! Happy to hear it!

Dutchess_III's avatar

It’s about 60 degrees here @JLeslie.

jca's avatar

@Dutchess_III: Did the doctor have any answer as to why you had that problem?

Dutchess_III's avatar

No. She just said it happens sometimes. There were no signs of blood clots and my pulse and blood pressure were very good.

JLeslie's avatar

I was thinking that fall weather is moving in, but still thought I mention it as a possibility.

Hopefully keeping your feet up will get rid of it fast.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@Dutchess_III Are you sensitive to changes in air pressure? What is the weather like where you are? Maybe you are predicting a storm soon?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, I recognize air pressure changes. Combined with other weather factors it’s often the sign of a possible tornadoes. I wouldn’t say I’m particularly sensitive to it though. I’ve never had this happen before.

Provided you don’t suffer from thyroid failure, it may just mean you need a little extra iodine in your diet. My thyroid test always come out normal but I had swollen feet and ankles for years. I read that iodine deficiency can cause this problem. So I started taking iodine twice a week and magnesium (w/vitamin d and calcium) 3 times a week. I tend to be low in vitamin D so I take that daily and I need the magnesium to help with that, but also because Magnesium helps with foot cramps. I stopped taking it for a while because I forgot and kept getting feet cramps. Then I started up again and the feet cramping stopped. Even if you eat well, the problem is that aging keeps us from absorbing nutrients like we use too and also our food is often depleted of actual nutrients because the soil is getting depleted of nutrients and most of us don’t eat as well as we think.
Now if your problem is thyroid and you are on medications, then I suggest you talk to your doctor before taking iodine.
If this doesn’t work then I would suggest seeing a doctor.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I saw the doctor @Pandora. She said it’s no thing. It’ll go away.

jca's avatar

Did it go away, @Dutchess_III? It’s been more than a few days now.

JLeslie's avatar

Did I put my last answer on the wrong Q? This one just popped up again with other people answering it.

The summary was Kidney disease has a lot of your symptoms.

Food tastes odd, swollen ankles, and I think you recently have been itchy? If I remember correctly you have high blood pressure, a risk factor, but I don’t remember for sure that’s you, it might be a different jelly with the BP problem.

If the doctor didn’t run a kidney function test I’d consider getting it done.

Edit: Forgot the link
I found fir kidney disease symptoms. Check it out. Maybe you have more symptoms and haven’t realized they all are part of the puzzle. I hope not. I hope you just had a few days of swollen ankles and it passes.

Dutchess_III's avatar

It’s going down slowly @jca.

jca's avatar

I don’t see that as a normal thing, @Dutchess_III. You asked this question 5 days ago (as of Friday) and to me, that’s more than “a couple of days.”

JLeslie's avatar

Did the doctor do blood tests?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Was it Friday? I thought it was Monday.

jca's avatar

@Dutchess_III: Fluther says “5 days ago.” I’m saying “5 days ago as of Friday (today).”

Dutchess_III's avatar

It may have been Friday.

NomoreY_A's avatar

Stop flurthering and get a doc appointment

Dutchess_III's avatar

I already did, @NomoreY_A. A week or 6 days ago. Looks like it was on Monday.

jca's avatar

Yeah but @Dutchess_III, the doctor told you then that it should be gone in a few days. You said you still have it, although it’s less. It’s almost a week now, which to me is more than a few days.

Brian1946's avatar

@Dutchess_III

Is the swelling almost or completely gone?
