Could you tell me a little or a lot about your pillow?

Asked by LornaLove (10037points) October 6th, 2017

A pillow is a big deal for me. I finally found the right combination of pillows around 2013 and even transported the duo from South Africa to London. Sadly, because I could not manage all my bags I left the pillows somewhere in the deepest bowels of Heathrow airport. I know they ‘blow up’ suspicious parcels so I often think about how sad it would be seeing all the innocent feathers flying around in slow motion. My perfect pillows lost forever.

Nearly 5 years on and I still cannot find the perfect pillow. I have woken up again this morning with a sore neck and headache.

I’ve tried orthopedic, fancy-pedic, some with springs, side sleepers, back sleepers all to no avail. I had a perfect duo I lost once around 2009 when I went to a conference in Johannesburg and sadly left them on the bed in a rush to catch my flight.

What is your relationship with your pillow! Any suggestions or ideas for a picky pillow person? Any tips or tricks? What is your pillow combination like?

Mine are stuffed with shredded memory foam. Nice and firm, can be fluffed up as much as i like, and they never go flat.

It is person sized, and has a naked anthropomorphic wolf on it.

My sleeping pillow is from Ikea, feathers and down, and I removed a double handful of feathers to make the firmness perfect. I am soon to add them back in to renew the floofiness and support.
All the other pillows on the bed or for reading or back support or somesuch, but I cherish my sleeper.

My perfect pillow was accidentally forgotten in a hotel during a holiday visit in 1995. I miss it to this day.

My current pillow is the closest I have found in all that time – it is organic talalay latex – a very light and soft foam. I also have more dense foam pillows for support when sitting up in bed.

I think I may be allergic to down, but I do like how those pillows can me molded – the shredded foam pillows they have nowadays are similar, but the ones I’ve tried have been too firm for me.

I am hardly aware of my pillow’s existence. It is a cheap fairly flat one that has the magical property of rendering me unconscious as soon as I lay my head upon it.

It is very thin.
When I am traveling, I use a towel, folded normally.

It’s one of those “therapedic” types that bounce back. It has a slight concave cut out on one edge. Great for side sleepers like me.

I ripped the annoying tag and now its hemorrhaging cotton. I like the My Pillow brand.

My orthopedic pillow is fine for a night, but over time will make my neck sore. If my pillow is too soft, I get the same result. I found one that is a foam pillow that has just the right support without being too firm.

I sleep on/in a heap of superfirm pillows. Three king-size pillows, 1 regular pillow, 2 neck rolls and 1 small square pillow. The big pillows keep me propped up as I don’t breathe well when I’m too flat on the bed. The neckrolls are on my sides, kind of keeping me on the big pillows. The other two pillows move around depending on how the night is going.

Sounds like a pillow party!

@LornaLove I have a small original-sized Sobakawa pillow. Filled with buckwheat hulls. I can easily swipe my arm underneath the pillow to obtain the proper support for my neck/head. Easily arrange to my comfort. And I have a special fluffy pillow which I bought from “A Small Pillow Company”. I alternate between the two. The fluffy pillow has “adjustable” fill as there is a nearly invisible zipper at one end which you can remove/or add fill. Really like both! I’m a fussy about my pillow person. lol

@si3tech reminded me!

I had a small sobakawa but it was filled with mystery foam pellets (like a bean-bag) from China – maybe it was a knockoff (I bought it at CVS). It was OK, but didn’t stay re-shaped the way down does. When it disintegrated, I considered a changing to a real buckwheat one, but figured it also wouldn’t retain the shape I put it in and I thought the buckwheat kernels would probably harder/lumpier than the foam pellets. That’s when I first tried the shredded foam ones, but they were too firm for me.
