Is it more sad when someone beautiful dies?

Asked by LornaLove (10037points) October 10th, 2017

In general when media reports on the tragic death of a beautiful person it seems to be met with greater sadness? I say this because a lot of newspapers in the UK will have a comment section and many people commenting will say ‘How tragic such a young and beautiful person died’, or words to that effect.

Does the young and beautiful person have more to lose from dying than say an overweight and arbitrary looking person?

I think it’s more to do with young age than being beautiful!!

Human beings have been trying to portray beauty in their art since they began producing art.
Thus, it is clear that beauty is a prized human value.
So it makes sense that the loss of someone or something beautiful would have significance to human beings.

wishing fat chicks were still thought beautiful.

It is more sad when someone beautiful dies, however it is much more sad when someone we love dies, whatever they may have looked like.

To humans, yes, because, and they may deny it all they want, subconsciously, they decry the lost opportunity to mate with this particular specimen.

I am surprised that nobody thought to mention that beauty is only skin deep. Anyhow, here is what Poe had to say.

“The death of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world.”

More notable, I would opine.

If a weed dies in your yard, you’re less likely to notice than if a rose bush dies…

Not for me. It’s more sad when the deceased is someone I care about.

No, it is not sadder. Sadder to me is when a good person dies.
