Why is the national anthem played at sporting events?

Asked by LostInParadise (32180points) October 14th, 2017

Playing the national anthem at sporting events has been in the news lately. Why is it played? I don’t get the connection. Are team sporting events a proxy for war, and therefore tied to the military and then to our country?

Perpetual instilling of nationalism in the subjects of the Vaterland.
Just like having the picture of past Führers in the classroom, pressuring/forcing young impressionable minds to parrot the “pledge of obedience allegiance” in school, and glorifying the Wehrmacht military, going so far as to allow recruitment on school grounds.

But why at sporting events and not at movies, plays or concerts?
