Would you rather go camping at the beach, or in the woods?

Asked by Kardamom (33494points) October 14th, 2017

I live close enough to the beach that the idea of camping there seems superfluous. I love to camp, and the idea of camping always involves the mountains, and the woods, and lakes. I enjoy going to the beach, but camping there doesn’t make any sense, since I can drive there virtually every single day, if I wanted to, and often do.

For those of you who don’t live right next to the beach, or the woods, which place would you rather camp?

What’s your ideal idea of camping? I would love to continue to tent camp, but the idea of sleeping on the hard ground, even with an inflatable mattress, sounds rather painful these days. I would really love to have a medium sized Airstream trailer to camp with. Not too big to tow, but big enough to have a decent place to sleep, and a cute, but functional little kitchenette.

Tell me about your ideal camping trip.

Woods for sure. I actually live about 60 minutes between the beach and a sweet spot on a old logging road with a nice creek. The woods every single time.

I hate sand when camping. It gets all over everything. A bit of dirt in my sleeping bag isn’t a problem. And in the woods we can get more firewood if needed. I am so bad at estimating the amount of wood needed to keep a fire going.

I live in Florida.

There are two places I regularly-ish go camping: The Ocala wilderness reserve (woods) and Fort DeSoto Park (beach, but wooded-ish).

We tent-camp – actually my basic set up is a walled 10×10 pop up that isn’t really sealed away from the outside, but it makes a roomy place to crash and there’s enough lavender around that the mosquitoes don’t bother us.

My kid clearly prefers the beach. I’d rather be in the woods. I like being far enough from society that I can see the stars (though I have never been SO far out that I’ve seen a naked sky, more’s the pity). The little man is still afraid he’ll get lost if he plays in the woods. His sense of direction sucks, so I can’t blame him too much. Hopefully he gets better with age and practice.

I like having a bathroom and shower nearby.
One of the ideal places for me is next to my own woods. I have a 9’ x 14’ tent that i place tucked n between two large shrubs so it is out of the wind but facing the house. so i can run 150’ of electrical extension cord.to it for lights and a 450 watt warmer. The floor is covered with a 3/8 inch, double layer Tekfoil so it is coushioned and warm. I put solar powered lights around to gently light the area.
I do not enjoy the scratching sound of mice and voles burrowing so days before I set up a perimeter of traps to dissuade those kinds of visitors. I also sprinkle a perimeter of boric acid to keep ants away.
One of the things i like the most is listening to the other wildlife moving around. Deer will snort and thump the ground to test the area. Owls hoot, screech and call at odd hours. I can hear four legged creatures rustling over leaves and breaking twigs.

When i need to use the bathroom I just get up and go inside the house.
Is that still considered camping?

Is there a toilet nearby?? Because if there isn’t, I’ll take the woods.

The woods, roughing it out doors with tent and campfire.

Woods, sand gets into everything and it is usually too damn hot with no shade on the beach.
If we do end up at the beach it is usually winter/spring

@LuckyGuy I would totally go camping with you. I always enjoyed tent camping but it was work packing up everything, setting up the tent and other stuff, etc. This reminds me of what I say about cruises when people just rave about the ship and food and entertainment etc. Why don’t they have a land lover cruise and stay docked….just let land people get on the ship and play a few days but not really leave. It seems like such a great plan.

@MollyMcGuire My thoughts exactly! Think of the energy saved! I’d sign up for a “trip” like that.
I host a long weekend event at my home every year. It has kept growing and now some folks come 2 weeks early and some stay 2 weeks late! it is great. They park their RVs, hook up to water and electricity and just chill. We love it!
