How much does anonymity matter to you on Fluther?

Asked by rockfan (14632points) October 24th, 2017 from iPhone

I’ve come across users on here who don’t even want to reveal their age, while others have posted pictures of themselves. Just wondering where you stand?

I’m completely ok with posting this but I wouldn’t be comfortable revealing my full name on here.

I am honestly less concerned with y’all figuring out who I am in real life than I am about people from my real life finding this website and reading everything I’ve written here. In that sense I take care to separate Fluther from my real identity.

It’s been awhile since anything like this has happened, but at one point many years ago a user was creeping me out and I got the help of mods to remove some of the more personal information I had posted in the past out of fear for my safety.

It’s funny, the link is a photo of myself, and I’m half glad that the link didn’t work lol

Link works. I see you still have physical media and like Toy Story.

And like Mariah I am more concerned about people I know IRL finding this site.

rockfan's avatar

Oh ok, someone sent me a PM saying it didn’t work

I agree with @Mariah and @johnpowell. I would not like people from real life to find Fluther, but I guess I am more comfortable having this be anonymous, my dog persona is a blunter (and therefore less likable) than my IRL identity.

And I saw your pic, you look like a nice guy. :-)

I am in the same camp as @Mariah and @johnpowell. I am Facebook friends with enough jellies that others know me IRL (I have even met one in person!).

But some of my opinions on here have been pretty strong and blunt, I would not want them found by an employer.

It means much more to me now than it did several years ago.

I have revealed enough of the important stuff, and the rest is private enough for me. I have made friends off site with a number of jellies, and I’m grateful for that. I’m not sure how possible it is anymore to maintain privacy and be very active on the Internet. There are a few users on this site who could quite probably find me. They’re very tech savvy. I’m not worried about it yet.

I am in the camp with @Mariah and @johnpowell. I would not want my family of origin reading stuff that I have posted on here.

I would like my identity with this account remain an enigma. Otherwise, there’s no point of using a different account.

I’m seeing lots of the same as me. I’m a LEO IRL. Rather my statements not be found out came from me. I have some pretty controversial things to say, and sometimes I don’t even comment on certain things.

I’m not so much worried about some random person trying to find me. That person would likely regret that when they hear me rack my shotgun for the first, maybe last time. I’m a very protective person, when it comes to where I live. Stranger danger.

What I’ve said here, about my appearance is true. I have said many times where I live. Most of my desired anonymity is for professional reasons…

I don’t care if most of my fellow Jellies learn my identity, which I’ve already shared with many of you. I don’t want people from the outside world, however, finding me here and knowing who I am. Fluther’s the place where I can pour-out my heart with impunity.

I’m in the aforementioned camp too. I’d be happy to share more details especially with the old-timers, but I don’t want it to be something that everyone with Internet access (especially crazy stalkers) can trace to me.

I’m not fool enough to believe my identity truly hidden while participating here. I’m resigned to the idea that anyone determined to exert the effort involved in unmasking the real me is welcome to the disappointment awaiting them. In truth, I would probably tell anyone who bothered to ask.

LornaLove's avatar

I’m a little ‘iffy’ about it. In some ways I don’t care and in some ways I do, in ways, I can’t explain. I mean why would it matter? Except to say some of the stuff I’ve written is private outside of these watery walls.

Whatevs. My name’s Alyson, you can find me on Facebook. I live in Tampa. I have a shit credit score and nothing to lose. Come at me, bro.

johnpowell's avatar

I know Alyson’s full name and address and I am somewhat curious about how I would go about paying her internet bill. I know her ISP.

I wonder if I could just call and give the info I know and would they let me plop 100 bucks on her account.

My bank will let anyone add funds to my account with just the six digit account
number.

I mean, I wouldn’t stop you. Haha.

I choose what I want to say and I choose who I will say it to. What I say to friends I might not say to strangers or family or employers. It is natural to want to control how you communicate that’s why anonymity is important here.

Actually @zenvelo you’ve met one in penguin.
