Do typists memorize the shift-top row?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24945points) October 31st, 2017

Basically !@#$%^&*() . Are you expected to know the special characters? I took typing in high school and I blanked out when they got to special characters.

A good professional typist would have it memorized, as they come into usage just as much as other keys.

The top row on a typewriter was different from the usual computer keyboard. There was no 1 key, and the shift – top row was ” # $ % _ & ’ ( ) *

I know I would not win any contests. But people remark on how fast I type, so I guess I am a typist.

I don’t know the top row without looking. I can often correctly hit ”@” and ”$” but I often miss, too.

I know them by touch more than rote memory. I can find the carat without looking while actually typing, but if you asked me which key it was at the pub quiz I might get it wrong.

Yes. And 10 key.
My husband says I type so quickly and elegantly, like water flowing.
