Has not happened to me but I guy I worked with was behind on alimony payments. His ex’s lawyer hit him with the max for 3 months.(six pay checks).
This is on an old medical bill I didn’t even know I owed on. I am barely making ends meet as it is and don’t know how I will afford this.
Sorry to hear that, the past due bill must been a large amount to cause them to tell you that they would garnish your wages. Have you talked to the group that currently has the bill. Call an tell them you will pay an amount per month. You have to pay or they will come back and garnish any way.
I owe $2400. I am trying to contact them, but just end up being on hold for hours. Tempted to just go to their office. District court already has date filed, although I haven’t received any notification, so it may be too late.
Only too late when they garnish the wages in court, up until then it is open.
Just not sure they will be willing to work with me.
If you don’t ask, they will just take the money out of your wages for sure.
This makes no sense to me. I was an auditor that audited hospitals for many years. One thing we audited was bad debts which were the accounts of patients that did not pay their bills. All bad debts were to be treated the same whether they were Medicare, Medicaid, private pay, commercial insurance, etc.
The hospital had to notify the patient in writing three times within 180 days that they owed the bill. At that time they could turn it over to collections. The collection company had to notify the patient also, and I think it was 3 times also. They can then garnish your wages. You should have had plenty of notice that you owed this bill. If you didn’t get any notices, you should call the facility and tell them you were never notified.
This is in the United States. I don’t know where you live.
I.never received notices.
