It’s great to have this website when you really need it. My right shoulder began hurting pretty badly Saturday night around 4am and continues. It could be bursitis or, as I think, tension. I can’t sleep well due to this so I’m tired at the same time I have this pain. What is the best pain reliever? Prescriptions are out. I have heavy groceries to lift but I won’t attempt doing it with this illness.TIA !!

Try Aleve. It is pretty effective.
Take 600mg ibuprofen, plus 500 mg of tylenol together.
Read the maximum daily dosage.
It works.
Big fan of ibuprofen for that sort of thing. It (and Aleve for that matter) fight inflammation too, so will help immediately, and over a couple days as well.
You can take up to 800mg “safely” at once but can also control the dosage since most pills are 200mg.
Don’t drink with it (or most painkillers).
Just want to add that if you’re going to try an NSAID such as Aleve or ibuprofen, please take with food. I think you’ve said you’ve already experienced digestive damage due to these meds, so you probably already know.
Yes, I used to get 600 mg ibuprofen prescription strength then realized I could just take three 200 mg over-the-counter. I would try taking 200 three times a day or you could take 600 – three pills at night. As @Mariah says, you should take it with food. You might also alternate and take tylenol two hours after. Try hot compresses as well.
Too much ibuprofen on a daily basis can damage your kidneys and cause ulcers so alternate with Tylenol.
I basically agree with @josie, except I would start with just 600 mg ibuprofen and no Tylenol and see if it suffices. If at the hour mark you don’t feel significantly better than pop another ibuprofen if you want, and add two regular strength Tylenol. Take ibuprofen with some food and a full glass of water. It can be just a few crackers or pretzels or a full meal. Any food is fine. It should start working in about 50 minutes.
Some states you can still get codiene over the counter, but I don’t recommend it. The ibuprofen and Tylenol should help.
Warning: no alcohol with Tylenol. That means no alcohol while Tylenol is in your system.
Also, never take more than 800 mg of ibuprofen at once.
You can take the Tylenol and ibuprofen together if you need a big punch of pain reliever. The ibuprofen with relax the muscle and Tylenol helps to curb the pain message to the brain.
Also don’t lift anything above ten pounds for several days. Careful doing the laundry and getting in and out of bed and the car. No reaching, no twisting, no lifting in a bent over position.
I will echo praises for Aleve.
I suffered a bad back for years, and it really helped.
I bought a small box of ibuprofen, 200mg each, and two of them work great for sleeping. My shoulder is a lot better but having started on Saturday I was sure it would be well by now. After grocery shopping on Monday it got a little worse. Twisting my wrists while pushing a cart packed with groceries bothers them the next day. This, too shall pass I hope.
My s/o offered to shop for me but he has a bad leg and that scares me to death thinking he’ll fall down in the store. That would be the second time if he did.
