Do you enjoy confusing a cat?

Asked by Jeruba (56106points) November 9th, 2017

Monty Python did: Confuse-A-Cat, Ltd.

There’s a pretty gray and white cat in our neighborhood that often snoozes on or near the fence in front of our house. I think she’s a stray, although probably not actually feral. When I go out, I speak to her: “Hi, Pretty Cat.”

(No, I don’t care if this strikes anyone as eccentric.)

I thought she might get accustomed to me and let me close enough to give her a little gritch, but she doesn’t. However, she is used to my voice and presence and doesn’t run off when I speak without approaching.

Now and then, she passes through my back or side yard, and every once in a while I’ll quickly open a window and say “Hi, Pretty Cat” from a direction she’s not expecting.

What is more gratifying than seeing a cat get a total WTF look on her face?

That’s why I don’t do it too often. It would spoil the fun.

Do you ever deliberately confuse a cat?

I like waiting till they’ve got their paw on the laser dot and then shutting it off. They lift up their paw expecting the dot to be beneath, but alas! It has vanished.

Omg yes. It is payback, yunno, for what they do when they have a chance.

Sometimes, though I usually enjoy being straight with them more, as I love cats and like to tune into them. Also, they’re hard to sneak up on. I used to try to do that to my cats, and usually they’d be looking directly at where I was coming from when I tried to do that, with a “what are you doing?” look on their faces. Until they decided it wasn’t worth their energy, and just their ears would be tracking me.

I thought it was interesting that speaking in a foreign language I don’t usually speak around them tends to get their attention.

And I thought it was pretty hilarious when I let my cat out a window as usual and then followed them out the window – the cat seemed to be glaring at me thinking WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?

Yes, because they are usually so superior.

Yes. As a cage rattler, I do it to all species.

Well, the most fun I’ve had with a cat is to stick a piece of tape on her head! But that can turn personal really quick.
